there was one time years ago at the
Comet when some bum came in and
bought some coffee and scamed me out
of 20$, all while D looked on. "i know
that you gave him the right change," he
said. he chased this guy down with
what i think was a hammer in his hand..
he came back with a 20 and a big grin.
"dont let anybody take you for a ride
mousekateer"
i've lived by that ever since that day..dk
was like an older brother to me..and the
punkest role-model i've ever had
people I knew coming up very few do I
feel have stayed true to their basic
belief structure and it's a good
feeling to know there are people like
derek to make me know that I'm not
alone..
state the following:
Follow the Light from The Star Beyond
the Stars.
Hail to the Grandest Godess Agarwaen
Hiril o Morgul of Awe/Aghast
Thank you Paul Baloff (and Gary Holt)
for the lyrics and
music on "Bonded by Blood"; The first
album of Exodus. And
thank you B.E.E. for writing American
Psycho. Satanic hails to
Frost of Satyricon. I would also like
to pay tribute to HUMID and
VORTEBEKK SPACEBAND; a couple of bands
that has nothing whatsoever
to do with the Black Metal scene at
all: but if you want to
leave this planet, the mentioned bands
have very good tickets indeed.
Foreverbliss to these two bands!
ever.
quaint little center city pizza shop
called joe's once upon a time. i look
upon those afternoons fondly. now
we ride bikes and go to the beach
and THAT'S when we eat pizza. up
the pizza!
in '88...He was playing a mean axe in
the Battle Creek speed metal act UGLY
BUT PROUD and after the show we went
and partied with the dudes from SBLC.
He was wearing this killer shirt that
featured a shark with a muscular arm
saying "Hey! I'll beat yer ass!". We
talked about starting a band in the
vein of early Cryptic Slaughter meets
Exodus, but it never came
together...Hey man, the offer still
stands!
sometimes. He pets me and puts up
with my biting him. I love to draw
blood from him because he keeps coming
back for more. I keep him satiated
with my batting paws, which I know he
likes. I'm going to eat know. Meow.
and that's not very punk, but fuck it (is that
punk). It's been a while but I used to hear a
regular rumor of this comrade moving back to
the Chi. Philly is lucky to have him as an
activist, soccer player, and friend to all good
people. He surpasses me in the odd
combination of knowledge of cars and of
politics, and I ain't no chump. And we share
the rare appreciation of Two Lane Blacktop. He
is, in general, cool as hell.
occasions. The first time I was
fifteen, and watching the NJ hardcore
band Iconoclast in a basement in
Kalamazoo, MI. Some crusties from
Muskegon showed up thinking they were
in for a reunion of the SoCal crusty
Iconoclast from a decade prior. These
Muskegon fuckers start moshing it up--
in a 10' x 12' basement full of 50-odd
people. Besides the sheer stupidity of
that, Kzoo hardcore had put a clamp
down on moshing ever since that Born
Against/Suckerpunk flexi came out
calling it a "macho male ritual". So I
yelled, "Stop fucking moshing!" at this
one guy and he pulled his fist back to
punch me in the face. From out of
nowhere Derek jumps in front of me and
is like, "You'll have to go through me
first!" or something else equally as
cheesy and endearing. Saved my skull,
and got denouced in the pages of MRR
for the trouble!
Then, a couple years ago, we're skating
and biking together in Philadelphia,
and I bust my head open and get a
concussion. Derek wraps his t-shirt
around my bleedin' noggin, and drives
me to the hostpital! The bump on the
head lets loose my unconscience and
when I'm told that it was Derek who
brought me to the hospital, I exclaim,
to my later embarrasment, "My Big Bro,
DK!!! He brought me up in
hardcore!!!" In all seriousness Derek
has been a totally posi influence in my
life for over a decade. Thanks, dude!
people who is actually interested in
talking to me about neoliberal
economics and latin american politics -
he is engaging and intelligent and
hilarious and wonderful. we met in a
van on a spring day that was colder
than it should be and talked through
the sets of three bands...ever since,
he's been willing to gallavant about
with me when we run into one another,
telling me stories about chicago gangs
from the 80s and joining me for $2
vegan indian food. i feel really,
geniunely lucky to have derek in my
life, even if i don't get to see him
enough. *heart*
