Hyun Joong debuted with the 5-member band SS501 in 2005. He and his SS501 members appeared in Park Kyung Lim's show Thank You For Waking Us Up (2005) and Thank You For Raising Us (2006), where he proved to be a very heavy sleeper. He and his SS501 members appeared in MNet's "Idol World" (2007) which had them doing various missions in Japan.

He joined the cast of MBC variety reality show We Got Married on May 11, 2008, with Hwang Bo, who is 6 years his senior. They achieved high popularity acting as a newlywed couple. Due to his appearance on We Got Married, he was cast in the Korean version of Boys Over Flowers (TV Series)/Hana Yori Dango as one of the members of the famous F4. Known as the Lettuce Couple, Hyun Joong and Hwang Bo went on to win MBC's Best Couple Award. Hyun Joong and Hwang Bo made their official exit from We Got Married on December 14, 2008 because of the scheduling conflicts presented by Boys Over Flowers.

In the hit drama series, Boys Over Flowers, he plays Yoon Ji Hoo (Hanazawa Rui, in Hana Yori Dango). The series was a huge media and ratings sensation in Korea during its run from January-March 2009, garnering a huge amount of popularity for Hyun Joong. As of April 2009, Hyun Joong is preparing SS501's new album with his members.

Kim Hyun Joong was recently rated on Section TV as the hottest in Korea.[citation needed]

In real life, he is close friends with TVXQ's Hero Jaejoong and Micky Yoochun, and Big Bang (band)'s T.O.P.
He is known for being blunt and being 4D (stands for fourth dimensional, since he makes funny and odd comments as though he's in his own world).
He particularly loves guitars, which he has been playing since a young age, and manhwa (comic) books.
His family consists of his parents and one older brother.
He is close with his entertainment company (DSP Entertainment)'s President, who wrote him a letter in March 2009 that was published in a Korean newspaper. The President praised Hyun Joong's diligence and effort in taking on the new challenge of acting while remaining committed to SS501.
According to his SS501 members, his face resembles an ox or a dog.
He has a close group of friends since childhood (referred to in Korea as "testicles friends"), and he owns a chicken shop with them.
He considers Seo Taiji his inspiration for becoming a singer after hearing the song "Ultramania."
He has a very difficult time getting up in the mornings, as shown on "Thank You for Waking Me Up" and "We Got Married."
