I have had the great pleasure of
sharing space with John Perry a few
times in Maine, and even cruising
around Boston in my car once, listening
to him sing along with Pink
Floyd's "Mother" (quite nicely, in
fact.)
He is one of those characters whose
company always leaves you feeling
enriched, is tremendously honest, and
he emits authenticity like a radio
tower (but with a lot less
interference.) To top it off, he
writes as well as he thinks.
Barlow's life is one big cocktail party,
and it's a pretty cool one. The list of
his closest friends now stands at a
thousand or so, and he's not kidding
about this. His heart is bigger than
Mae West's hips. Noone really
knows how he can be at 17 places at
once, and engage in sincere, really
smart and truly involved interaction
with anyone wild, beautiful, fearless
and cool at each of them, but many
have suspected secret cloning. The
real Barlow is probably happily
wallowing on a hidden beach in the
Caymans right now, grunting Country
lyrics into the ears of a voluptious
blonde, while his alter ego is writing
just the exact things about
something important that you and I
would have said - except for that we
didn't.
John Perry Barlow invited me to his ranch in
Wyoming where we sat around thinking about
"stuff" once. It really expanded my notion of
how much "stuff" there actually was to think
about. JPB thinks about more "stuff" and is
able to capture these thoughts in a lyrical way
that has provided me with a great deal of the
basic memes that currently inhabit my head.
JPB is great in text, but you need to get him in
full motion for the full effect. If you ever have
a chance, I highly recommend it. ;-)
John Perry is probably one of the three or
four most interesting, most charismatic, and
most incredibly smooth people I've ever met.
He's one of the very few people I know who
actually takes the opportunity to make the
world a better place on a large scale. And
his fashion sense is impeccable. ;-)
Speaking of dinosaurs and green furry
creatures - as the continuing footsteps
of BigCos, government and fascist
forces in general dominate our lives,
it is JPB that fights the good fights -
even if it means his mechanical
royaltiies may be a bit curtailed. But
what I wanna see is JPB in a Berkman
Fellow meeting with Dave. :-)
I want to be more like John Perry when
I (finally) grow up. This man is my
idol. He is a frontier philosopher, an
online freedom fighter, a literary
enchanter and an amazing human being.
I think he may also be the last true
gentleman of the 21st century. Much
respect and mad love.
cyberspace, he'd be John Perry Barlow, who
never metaphor he didn't like.
