the ride is long.
here one-horse, one saloon town known
as austin (tx). i remember how he
bitched about it relentlessly,
promising that once he got his degree
he would drive back to california,
triumphantly displaying his confederate
flag on the back of his truck for all
to see. or, at least, that's how i
remember it. there are certain parts of
my past blotted out and over-exposed,
like an old photo. so i can't say i
remember it all too clearly. but i
remember that he was kind to me when i
badly needed it, and that we talked a
lot into the wee hours of the morning.
i don't even know anyone anymore who
thinks talking is a virtue.
