Morning Musume (モーニング娘。) is an all-girl J-pop group from Japan. They are sometimes also referred to as "Momusu" (モームス。). Their act revolves around singing and dancing to generally upbeat melodies. They are the lead group of Hello! Project, masterminded by Naoki Yamazaki, and managed by producer Tsunku, who composes nearly all the lyrics and melodies for their songs. Currently, Morning Musume is Japan's Best Selling Female Group. They have sold over 16,379,822, copies in Japan only. Musume (娘) in this context, means girl, although the literal meaning is "daughter". The group is particularly well-known for its ever fluctuating line-up, with "graduations" and auditions occurring nearly each year. Over the years there have also been several splinter groups, (including, but not limited to, Tanpopo and Pucchi Moni) and Morning Musume often works closely with other Hello! Project acts, including but not limited to Aya Matsuura, Berryz Kobo, Melon Kinenbi, and v-u-den. On April 16th, 2008 Morning Musume's 36th single, Resonant Blue, was released. On September 24th, 2008 Morning Musume's 37th single, Pepper Keibu, was released. On November 26th, 2008 Morning Musume's 1st cover album, Cover You, was released. The album features songs by the defunct duo Pink Lady written by Aku Yuu. 2008 was the first year in which there were no changes in Morning Musume's lineup. On February 18th, 2009 Morning Musume's 38th single, Naichau Kamo (I Might Cry), was released. On March 18th, 2009 Morning Musume's 9th studio album, Platinum 9 Disco, was released. On May 13th, 2009 Morning Musume's 39th single, Shouganai Yume Oibito (People who can't help but chase dreams), was released. The single ranked number 1 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart and the first number 1 single for the "Eight Generation" members, Aika Mitsui, Junjun, and Linlin. On August 5th, 2009 Morning Musume's 40th single, Nanchatte Renai, will be release. Trivia: #1. It takes 13th singles for the "Sixth Generation" members to get their first #1 single. Starting from 19th single, Shabondama to 31st single, Aruiteru. #2. Koharu Kusumi only takes 5 singles to get her first #1 single. #3. Junjun and Linlin takes 6 singles for having their first #1 single. #4. Aika Mitsui takes 8 singles to get her first #1 single. #5. Morning Musume 39th single, Shouganai Yume Oibito was Tanaka Reina, Eri Kamei, and Sayumi Michishige second #1 single. #6. Takahashi Ai and Niigaki Risa have the longest tenures of any Morning Musume members in history.
