testimonial to my sister emily, aka
ylime. "ylime" (pronounced yuh-lime)
would doubtless make her cringe but it's
a revealing window into her past. one
day when she was very little and we
were getting bused to our "gifted"
elementary school to rot like the
troubled latchkey kids we were, em
announced, "you know what my name
spelled backwards is?! it's ylime!" (she
was little. it was cute.) of course my
brother and i promptly created a logo
out of it and pummeled her with it for
several years.
what is poignant about ylime? it
indicates a certain optimism in the face
of chaos/boredom, and also a
refreshing lack of a filter. this is a unique
quality of em's and though it has gotten
her into some hot water it is at bottom
quite evolved. she also used to make
really cute pants and i hope that one day
she returns to that art. until then, we'll
have to content ourselves with the elvish
costumes she sews
hand, tearing away the greasemarks and
wallpaper to get what's underenath, the
words etched in the bedrock of her soul.
effervescent Miss Emily the proper
tribute. During a very odd and
youthful time in my life, she was
there. I recall spending hours in her
ever-tasefully decorated vintage-
inspired digs whilst we gabbed about
boys. Always one to light up a room
and a spliff, em and I had some
humorous evenings of well, humor. I
love the illustrious Miss Emily.
