      • One night in San Francisco, Alex
        passionately delineated the linguistics
        and pragmatics of Portuguese, citing
        myriad examples replete with emphatic
        gesticulation, while sipping bourbon and
        whimsically pontificating on the
        possibilites of his microloan empire.

      • On a year spent wandering the
        North American continent, Alex took
an extended stay in rural Ohio in the
small college town I was living in at
the time. A month or so after he got
there we were having lunch, and it
slowly dawned on me that in eight
weeks he knew more people at my
small college than I had met in
        three years. Whoa.

      • One day, Alex and I will publish our
book, already five years in the
        making, about the existentialist crisis
that we barreled our way through,
side by side, on a leafy college
campus all those years ago. Yes, the
        timeless, heartwrenching decision of
this Ivy versus that Ivy. It will be a
        great contribution to the Western
canon. They will study it at both Yale
AND Harvard in the years to come,
as part of the fine American literary
        tradition of pompousness. Oh, rah!

      • before i met alex, i didn't think
anyone could beat me and my bottomless
pit of a stomach. boy, was i wrong.
alex has shown me a thing or two about
how to chow down! we went to tuckahoe
state park for 4th of july and alex
made a phatty bowl of coleslaw. it was
tasty! i admit it, i had seconds, but
alex near finished it all. that's one
of the things i admire most about
alex, his ability to truly appreciate
and thoroughly enjoy food. in that
way, we are very much alike. we went
to new orlean's cafe in adams morgan
and smiled at each other agreeing at
how delicious our bowls of sausage
gumbo were. alex also has incredibly
muscular thighs, must be from riding
his bike everywhere. alex, we miss
you. dc is lonelier without you. visit
        us soon.

      • Alex and I have only known each other face
to face for five days back in 1998. Yet there's
something about the way he writes a letter...I
think I feel something of a kindred spirit
within him. And that's hard to find.

      • Being the other (somewhat less
successful, but let's not dwell on that)
half of 1992 Olympic decathlete team Dan
& Dave, I can also testify to Alex's
internly prowess. Here is what we have
fed Alex so far: sausage, Zima, sausage,
Olde English, a truly astonishing amount
        of mozzarella, sausage, Captain Morgan.
All of these things he has eaten with
        aplomb. A must.

      • In my quest to get Alex laid for an
entire summer, I pretended to get a
bone tumor, and underwent 3 operations
just so he'd have a room to himself to
bonk my former roommate in. I wouldn't
go to such drastic measures for just
        any friend....especially one I've only
        met twice.
