I just had a baby! I was raised in NYC.

was DJing at the first Hip-Hop Against
Racist War show in Raleigh a couple of
years ago (well, I was at least trying my
best to DJ). There was a freestyle
competition at some point in the
evening, and my friend Dasan invited all
prospective MCs to come up to the
stage. A couple of seasoned rappers
get on and do their thing, and then up
walks Denise. This amazing woman
who knows everyone, who is so smart,
who runs these awesome coffee shops
and has the most wonderful daughter,
but who (as far as I know) had never
MC'ed in her life.
She had such spirit, such determination
and such a good natured-attitude that it
made no difference that her rhymes
weren't as fast and furious as the
others. She won that freestyle
competition hands down.
That's your typical Denise: totally a-
typical. She's full of surprises, and so,
so brave, full of good advice and
beautiful to boot. I consider myself
lucky to call her a friend.
probably ought to... i was out dancing last
night and she was too and well well well,
this woman can kick a leg up and a long
one at that. denise has energy and
spreads it without even trying.
furthermore, her daughter, blue is just one
of the neatest, authentic young women
around. durham is lucky to have denise
and blue--- how durham got to be so
lucky, i am still wondering. oh yeah, and
that vest at earthday denise... well, there
is only one word, hot.
