source of all things wonderful." And,
in fact, he's ok- I guess. He may,
more likely, be the source of all
things sarcastic, or all things
ridiculous, but he makes me laugh and
he's open to new experiences, like
frozen gummy worms and fresh bath
mats. There is no one with whom I
would rather get drunk and eat cheap
oysters.
lot. Or, more accurately, Mike would
argue a lot, with whatever I would say.
And so one day when he told me I was
wrong about something, I asked,
innocently: "How do you know?" And he
said, "Oh, well, I'm just guessing."
Aha! I felt vindicated. Then a year or
so ago we got together and, inevitably,
ended up arguing on a street corner at
2am. I guess I'm an arguer, too, after
all. :)
graduation, Mike and I are finally
reconnecting and I couldn't be happier
about it. Though he taunts me with
invitations to Spring Bling parties
and cosmic bowling outings that never
quite seem to materialize... one of
these days, Mike, one of these days.
my all-star globe-trotting posse, M2 would
be my first round draft pick so that we could
finally actualize our fates as long lost
"activity partners." He's the only person on
this earth that I can talk to about Bahia,
Cartegena, go-go, the DoC, Philly, Borges
and the relative merits of Wrex N' Effex-- all
in one conversation. He's so cool that
Chuck Brown gave him a shout out during
his set. I love how M2 kicks it. And he'd be
in charge of the hot beats!!!!

don't need any help from a testimonial.
because I wanted to know which
bathrooms were clean at work. I
happened upon Charlie Ornstein's piece
in L.A. Times, in which he recalls the
no-nonsense ethics that Stephen Glass
instilled within him during his time at
The Daily Pennsylvanian. So, I wonder,
what did Mike Madden instill within his
subordinates at the same college
paper? A few things. First, that
thing he does with his pen. I do that
all the time now. In fact, I carry
extra pens, in case I lose one, so I
can be sure to do it in any
circumstance. Next, a refusal to take
his job too seriously. That's pretty
key in journalism -- and the bonus is
that it generally infuriates the
assholes at any given paper. Finally,
no one was more legitimately curious
about the silly world around him than
Mike. No one took more pleasure in
reading or conveying the bizarre
happenings of the day than this guy.
And that's what makes great newsman.
Oh, Charlie... you were just a few
years too early.

espousing liberal philosophy. Or maybe
it just seems that way to me. He's

c'mon, he wears glasses. And hangs out

writing stories faster than any human

be duped by Canadians who tell him
they're in a song by James. Sorry,
Mike, somebody had to do it.
