      • henning punches me whenever he sees me, very
hard, in the face. but that doesn't stop me from
thinking he is a great songwriter, musician,
arranger and photographer. i guess he's tall.

      • "The infant does not appreciate that an
object continues to exist when it has
been removed from view", I read this
        morning in an otherwise stuffy
education text-book, and it made me
        think of "Henry". Hen's delightfully
off-kilter sense of the world and sense
of humor was all over that sentence. I
could see Hen chuckling to himself
about the idea of a fuddy-duddy
        infant "not appreciating" that
        something something something. Anyway,
it also reminded me of Henning because
he makes being weird something for
everyone to aspire to, and also because
        he seamlessly marries two disparate
        qualities: cynicism and innocence.
When Henry (Henning is a verb, am I
        right folks?) joined Humbert, we
        immediately became an "important band"
rather than simply being a weird band
with potential. Hen saw that potential
and decided (after much quiet pushiness
from yours truly), not unlike Macca, to
switch from guitar to bass and join us.
We (Anthony W. and myself) knew
        immediately how musical Hank was
        because this instrument switch was
flawless, effortless. Here was a great
bass player who had never really played
bass before. But then, Hank is a multi-
        instrumentalist, and suddently we had
the range of a real band, like Wilco or
the Beach Boys. Also, a songwriter of
his caliber being only one third of a
band's song output guarantees not only
        massive quantity, but also massive
        quality - a winning combination!
It is sad for me to no longer be in a
band with Hee-Hee. Once I left the
        Valley, he grew "sideboards" and
started to imbibe the occasional beer -
why wasn't I there for that? He once
taught me something I'll never forget:
He said, if you're playing a gig and
one of your bandmates makes a mistake
and messes up one of his parts, never
ever ever ever turn around and look at
him. It brings audience attention to
the mistake, it highlights a negative,
it shows up your mate, it just stinks.
It's also something I, no doubt, had
done before. But H. Wilhelm O. taught
me a lot about how to be more zen, more
calm, less of a dick - and his
        fantastic record, Big Plans for
        Underachievers is still in regular
rotation in my Walkman - about 7 years
        since I first heard it.
'Ning, the Tall & Skinny Thing is not
only an original mind, a top-notch
songwriter and a gentle spirit, he's
done great work in dispelling the
        general reputation that rock musicians
have of being wasted, rude, egotistical
        and reckless. Cheers Henning!
ps...thanks for getting me into XTC

      • Henning is incredibly talented...I
        don't think there's anything musically
he could not attempt and master in a
short period of time. He hates his
voice but I wouldn't want anyone else
singing his songs. He opened my mind
to a lot of new music and to little
hobbies I can take up while watching
t.v. like making mobiles. I love his
fake laughs and I especially appreciate
all the encouragement he has given me
        since I've known him.

      • there are times when i read Henning's
        descriptive and casually opinionated
writings and i will laugh out loud. i
enjoy that tremendously. i bet you
would laugh out loud at Henning too. i
        admire his natural yet thought-
        provoking writing style.

      • Henning writes the songs that make
the whole world sing. He has a fake
dog but a real church's baby Jesus.
He's cool and funny, and he will be
nice and friendly to you, yes even you.
He talks a lot about getting punched
(and punching people) in the face,
but I'm pretty sure that's a load of
        bunk.

      • henning has giant feet, therefore needs
big socks. he is the color orange, for
those of us with synesthesia. he likes
steak and beer and reads good books.
smart, some say. the funniest person on
        earth, say others. you decide.
