Miri - the new destination of Malaysia. Miri owes it existence of oil, which was discovered there 1882. It is the first oil-producing town in Malaysia. Therefore, Miri aptly called "The Oil Town". The initial commercial activities in Miri mainly rely upon the petroleum & timber industries. With the concerted effort from the state Government, many timber companies have ventured into oil palm plantations & downstream wood-based industry.
Tourism has also become one of the major contributors to the local economy. For the tourist who likes natural beauty & jungle adventure, Miri is the place to be. By land, tourist could go to the Niah Caves, Lambir National Park and Loagan Bunut National Park. By air could go to the Gunung Mulu National Park (one of the only two world heritage sites in Malaysia), Bario Highlands and Long San. Off the coast of Miri, the Coral Reefs are an ideal place for diving and fishing.
Miri has a population of about 300,000 consisting of Chinese, Dayak, Malay, Melanau, Indian, Kayan, Kenyan, Kelabit, Bidayuh, & other indigenous groups.
Miri is not as just a staging post as it has attractions of its own. Not least is a wide range of accommodation from international class hotels to budget inns, good beaches and dozens of lively restaurants, pubs & bars.
