About Me:
Parenting Magazine
recently included me in their top 10
places to raise a family. I've been described as an emerald
on the banks of the Muddy Mo, which happens to be the
country's longest river, and a remarkably fast one too,
having an average current speed of 7
miles per hour. My name comes from the name of a local
American Indian group, meaning "against the current." The
Omaha Lancers hockey team calls me home, as do
the College World Series, the PGA Omaha Classic, the Omaha
Broomball Association, the Omaha Juggling Club, The Greater
Omaha Barbeque
Society, and the Aksarben Amatuer Radio Club. Elliott
Smith, Conor Oberst, Gerald Ford,
Malcom X, Marlon Brando, Fred Astaire, and Nick Nolte were
born in me.
I include within my embrace Boys Town, Father Flanagan's
[now non-sectarian] place for abused, abandoned, and
neglected boys and girls, as well as
centers of culture like Joslyn Art Museum, the Bemis Center
for Contemporary Arts, and the Durham
Western Heritage Museum, and Educational centers like
University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University, Grace
University, and
Metro Tech, and now Gallup University, a training center for
corporate executives. I'm currently developing a convention
center large enough to fit a 40-story building inside, if
you tip it over. In 1898 I was the host of the
Trans-Mississippi Exposition, held in conjunction with the
Indian Congress. During the Cold War, I would have been
target #2 in the event of a nuclear strike, due to the
location of Strategic Air Command just south of me. George
W. Bush hid out in me on Sept. 11, 2001. I am entirely too
conservative for my own taste, but getting better.

Who I Want to Meet:
If you know my charms, or have charms I may like, I want to
meet you. Send me mail. I have a policy for friend requests:
If you're not a city, not from me, or don't currently live
in me (or near me, like CB or Bellevue), please write a note
and tell me why you want to be my friend. Doesn't have to
be a dissertation, but I'm honestly interested, so please
make it thoughtful; I want to know who my friends are. My
name is Omaha Nebraska.
