Jos Mourinho, the son of a Portugal international goalkeeper, did not have the ability to fulfill his ambition to become a professional soccer player and at 23 years old enrolled in a Physical Education College with the intention of dedicating his life to coaching the game he loved.
After graduating he began his climb up the career ladder by taking minor jobs at his local division 1 club Vitoria Setubal and then division 2 Estrela Amadora.
His first break came when he was appointed as Sir Bobby Robson's translator at top Portugal club Sporting Lisbon.
Ex-England boss Robson and Mourinho forged a close working relationship and Mourinho became involved in Sporting's daily training program. When Robson moved to FC Porto in 1993 he took Mourinho with him and the pair guided Porto to two Portuguese League Championships over the next three years.
Robson and Mourinho moved to Spain in 1996 to take charge of FC Barcelona and when Robson moved to PSV Eindhoven in 1997, Mourinho remained at the Nou Camp to work under the successful Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal.
In 2000 Mourinho took his first solo step, returning to Portugal to coach Benfica but resigned after only nine matches after falling out with the board.
In 2001-02 he coached the modest Portugal club Uniao de Leiria before being appointed boss of FC Porto in January 2002.
Mourinho's arrival at Porto signalled the beginning of his rise to fame.
Porto finished third in the league that season and the following year Mourinho led them to victory in the Uefa Cup, the Portuguese League Championship and the Portuguese League cup.
In 2003-2004 Mourinho and Porto captured Europes most prestigious club trophy, the European Champions League.
Russian billionaire Roman Abramovitch then brought Mourinho to Chelsea to transform an under-achieving giant into a super club.
And the single-minded, master of tactics, ambitious Jos Mourinho is the man to match the challenge.
