John is very sensitive to other people's feelings. For that reason, he doesn't talk about himself much, because if he did, everything he said would make you feel ridiculously inferior and he doesn't want to be a jerk like that. So he'll just go ahead and keep his mouth shut and let you think he's ordinary.

But then he'll let slip some dry wit or insightful comment or mention of the fact that he raced in the Ironman World Championship, or you'll discover that this whole time you've been yammering he's had 18 things running through his mind, from figuring out exactly what will make you laugh, to his ideas for fixing a broken heart valve, to his reflections on the justice of bike lanes and you'll eventually come to the conclusion that he's kinder than you, more competent than you, a better athlete than you and more wise, and you'll wonder why he's even talking to you. It's probably because he's forgotten he's extraordinary and thinks you're pretty cool, too.

He's the bees' knees.
