I Love SHOEGAZE The short-lived reign of the shoegazers marked a period of intense creativity for the British music scene. By the early '90s, the droning monomania of Loop and the white noise of early Jesus and Mary Chain had blended with the soothing ambient pop of the Cocteau Twins to create the womblike sonic world known as shoegaze. Dubbed such by a bemused NME journalist to chide artists for their lackluster stage presence, the pack was headed by My Bloody Valentine, who released two epochal albums, the grindingly abrasive Isn't Anything in '88 and the landmark Loveless in '91. That band's sound became the benchmark for all other shoegazers, with heavily treated, multilayered guitars, acid-house-inspired drumbeats, and barely discernable vocals. Many bands took this template and ran with it, from the jangly noise pop of Ride to the dreamy, melodic Lush.
