About Me:
Born in HK, educated in London. I came back to HK to
try modeling and came in first runner up in the Miss HK
pageant. This launched my movie career, but I mostly
played "flower vase"(2-dimensional female) roles, most
notably as Jackie Chan's girlfriend May in the 'Police
Story' series. Then in 1988, I appeared in Wong
Kar-Wai's directorial debut, 'As Tears Go By', and in
1991 his follow-up film, 'Days of Being Wild." But it
wasn't until 1992 that I really began to be recognized as
a serious actress with 'Center Stage' AKA 'Actress', a
biopic about the famous Chinese silent film star, Ruan
Lingyu. My biggest artistic and critical success so far
has been the movie 'In the Mood for Love', another
wonderful collaboration with Kar-Wai. I'm known for
being one of the few HK actresses not to have a
second career as a pop singer, but most people don't
know that I once sang a duet with Tony Leung on a
Taiwanese awards show. I was so embarrassed, but I
think I did okay!

Who I Want to Meet:
After being married and divorced, I'm perfectly happy on
my own right now. Everyone says Tony and I would
make a pefect couple, but those are just movie roles!

Maggie frequently cited her performance in the movie As Tears Go By (1988), her first of many collaborations with film director Wong Kar-Wai 王家衛, as the piece that truly began her serious acting career. In Centre Stage, she performed in Cantonese , Mandarin and Shanghainese fluently, switching languages with ease. In Clean, she performed in fluent English, French and Cantonese. She is a polyglot as a result of her upbringing in England.
Audiences outside Asia have become increasingly familiar with her work, including Irma Vep, Centre Stage, Chinese Box, In the Mood for Love, Hero, 2046, and, most recently, Clean.
Cheung was the jury member at 1997 Berlin Film Festival, 1999 Venice Film Festival and 2007 Cannes Film Festival. For the first time in its history, the 59th Cannes Film Festival (2006) used a photographic image of a real actress on its poster — that of Cheung.
