essence of this dear friend. I will present it, to
the best of my ability, exactly as it happened,
without embellishment or undo rhetorical
flourish:
This winter Emily and I found ourselves sitting
at the coffee table in a beautiful Upper East
Side apartment at an opulent dinner gathering
hosted by an extraordinary and lovely pair of
mutual friends, when i noticed she was tearing
the bejesus out of her paper napkin. "What
are you doing?" I blurted out, amazed by the
determination she applied to the effort and
the swift results the rending wrought in
snowflake-like flights and raked-leave like
piles.
"I'm tearing my napkin into little pieces so it
will decompose faster," she said. "I don't want
future generations to have to deal with my
garbage."
"How admirable!" I said, again aloud, unable to
restrain myself. She of course shrugged off
the compliment with her customary grace, and
then matter-of-factly took my napkin from me
and promptly shredded it too!
Emily, I wish everyone shared your enthusiasm
for the preservation of Mother Earth. The
reinvigorating dynamism of a Summer
thunderstorm: EMILY!
your heart out! emily is a hot pink
godess with the sweetest voice you'll
ever hear!
She has a disarming smile. Don't mess
with her or I will break you.
