master wordsmith? the head
humorist? it's taken years for me to
muster... jon has been all things to
me in my lifetime: brother, nemesis,
friend, dance partner... words can't
really describe how much love i have
for him. he is, as they say, the best.
of a testimonial:
10)He babysat two four year olds and a
one year old by himself last night.
9)He isn't bored by "A Woman Under the
Influence."
8)You can read gossip mags around him
and he doesn't judge.
7)He doesn't act like he thinks your
an alkie when you pull a bottle of
wine and cups out of your beach bag in
the middle of the afternoon.
6)He says lots and lots of surprising
funny things.
5)He has the same birthday as my
daughter.
4)He's Baby Jackson's dad.
3)He's Ruby's dad.
2)He's Kara Jo's husband.
But before we get to number one,
here's a little story:
One night a couple of weeks ago, Kara
and Jon were watching my daughter. I
was driving home from the East Bay on
teh Bay Bridge, with the sparkly city
on my right and a Gilbert O'Sullivan
song on the radio. You know the one.
That really sad one. "Alone again,
naturally." So, I'm driving along
feeling kind of weepy and filled with
this kind of existential dread. So, I
get back to Kara and Jons and I tell
them about hearing that song. Jon
doesn't say anything, he just goes
into his music room and comes out with
the Gilbert O'Sullivan album and puts
in on his little record player on the
kitchen counter. We all listen to it
together, singing along, while the
kids take bath. Somehow it doesn't
seem so sad.
But, yeah, that's it. That's the
number one reason why Jon is worthy of
a testimonial.
1)Gilbert O'Sullivan.
sometime, I guess, and I don't even know who
I was back then. Who was I? Oh shut up,
rummy -- this isn't about me, it's about the
man we know as Jon. Father of children,
husband of wife, listener of sounds, maker of
lemonade (this is only a guess), offerer of
offerings, wrinkler of shirts, thinker of
thoughts, wearer of well-worn soft brown
leather shoes, pickler of beets, drinker of
drinks, wrastler of heavy theological
questions, dancer of family dances in the
kitchen with maybe a good friend around too,
holding hands like wee little elves in the forest
and skipping lightly like, uh, wee little elves.
Jon's idol and sensei, Ted Nugent. Jon shares
the Nuge's love of bowhunting and self-
improvement, and no one appreciates the
Motor City Madman's steamin' hot licks like
Jon. Gutiar licks, I mean. Not the other kind.
But then maybe he does -- jeez, I don't know.
I wouldn't want to judge, no matter what kinds
of things Jon and Ted get up to on a rainy
Sunday afternoon. I'm sure it's all very
wholesome.
but... we have a lovechild. He just
turned 16 and his name is Curly. He
needs pants. Send $$$.
should just ask Jon. He makes really
awesome ones. All the time!
my head, and Jon fixed it for me.
follow half-way across the country to
start an ass-kicking contest with,
resulting in one unlucky bastard
getting a substantially more painful
kick that sent him into the flower
bed. Later we drank Creatures from the
Black Lagoon and talked about soul
records until 7 in the morning. I have
very recently done a "beer bong" with
Jonathan and I am 33 years old so that
should explain everything.
