Discord, wreaking havoc

Chaos, Discord, being pretty, disco, stupefying the stupid

golden lyre, street musicians, the sound of slack jaws flapping in the breeze

ERIS, in Greek mythology, a sister of the war-god Ares
(Homer, Iliad, iv. 440), and in the Hesiodic theogony (225)
a daughter of Night. In her hey-day, she just as soon
started Wars as drink ambrosia. Not having been invited to
the marriage festival of Peleus and Thetis forces her to
ruin the party and the peace between men and gods by making
a golden apple with the inscription "to the fairest" which
she threw into the banquet. (Really, I was
going to bring the shrimp dip.) Because Hera, Athena and
Aphrodite all thought they were the most beautiful, a brawl
started, leading to the Trojan War. There is an important
lesson here about snobbery. Sometimes called the Daughter
of the Night, Discordia, or Bellona, Eris has been working
behind the scenes for centuries, rumoured to have had a
hand in manifesting the first bureaucracies, triplicate
forms, and insurance companies. We might well add the SCA,
Starbucks, the George Foreman Grill, the DMV, and Pac-Man.
She hadn't put in a personal appearance since the fall of
the ancient Greek and Roman empires until the late 1950's.
She then appeared to two young Californians and confused
them most sacredly. "Tell constricted mankind that there
are no rules unless they choose to invent rules."
