With the tragedy in New Orleans, I've been thinking:
You can judge a person in love the same way you can judge a person in disaster. Their true character is measured not by how they act when faced with loss, but how they acted without ever being forced.
Did the father hug his children every night when he thought he had a lifetime of nights to hug them or did he start only when their tiny beds were washed away?
Did the husband treat his wife with the respect and honor she deserved when they were living in comfort or did he only start when the sounds of her cries were overpowered by a levee breaking?
If he really cared, her tears would have been far more powerful than a level 5 hurricane.
You can make all the excuses you want, but I know that my father only started truly saying I love you to me, when I was old enough to run away. I'll take it, but I won't forget who he was when I couldn't even cross a street without holding his hand.
