Taekwondo loosely translates as 'The art of hand and foot'
or 'The art of kicking and punching'. The Tae part of
Taekwondo means foot or to kick. Kwon means hand or to
punch. Do translates as the way or the art of. The
practice
of Taekwondo is an ongoing education program with the
ultimate quest being the mastery of this fascinating and
profound Korean Martial Art. Whilst employed in this quest
you will undergo changes both physical and psychological.
The origins of all martial arts can be found in the
primitive need for self-protection. Basic survival skills
have developed into systematised methods of self defence
in
many countries. Examples of these include Greek Wrestling.
French Savate, African tribal war rituals and Brazilian
Capoeira. Over the last fifty years oriental martial arts
have moved into the mainstream of western society as an
art
and as a sport. In earlier times the practice of martial
arts was an ongoing process with the ultimate goal being
total physical and mental harmony.
