The Island of Negros in Central Philippines is rich in history, myths and legends. Most centered around the majestic and mystical Kanlaon Volcano. It is here where the legend of the Hari ng Negros the Ginoong Canlaon was born. This is not any ordinary pageant where trophies and cash prizes are awarded to the best contender but also a great responsibility and obligation is bestowed.
Every year contenders representing a town or city in either Occidental or Oriental Negros go through a rigorous screening process, familiarization tour of the island and training near an active volcano. The first winner in 2003 is Emmanuel Labirua who represented the City of Canlaon and bested 13 other strong competitors. In 2004, Reiven Bulado of Guihulngan took the crown which helped jump start his acting career. In 2005 Paul Brett Orozco of Dumaguete City wowed the crowd to give the City of Gentle People its first win. In 2006 Mark Xander Fabillar of Jimalalud stole the show and captured the hearts of the audience. In 2007 Paulo Mirasol of Bacolod City broke the 4 year winning streak of Negros Oriental and gave the City of Smiles- Bacolod City and the Province of Negros Occidental its first win. And now, in 2008 Ralph Jadraque from Mabinay, a complete dark horse, stunned the audience with his performance and awed the judges with his simplicity and sincerity giving the cave town its first glorious win.
"I am the Wielder of the Sword of Malaspina, the Guardian of the Gates of Margaha, the Protector of the Golden Salakot and the Defender of the Code of Calantiao. I am the Hari of Negros. I am the Ginoong of Kanlaon!."
