see us if you ever get back to Dallas.
Peace, love and Bill's___!
Buck Jones, I hooked up a show for the
band at The Mint in Los Angeles. They
drove 35 hours all the way out from
Dallas just for this one single showcase
gig. I invited every single booking
agent, publishing exec, lawyer, DJ, and
record company A&R person that I knew.
Everyone there was crazy about the
band's album and was totally looking
forward to the show. There were four
other bands on the bill, and (of course)
Buck Jones didn't get a sound check
before the show. They were totally
flying by the seat of their pants all
the way. After the first band played,
the club's soundman ran backstage and
told the band to hurry up and set up
their gear, and that he would he would
do the soundcheck during the first song.
(Unbelievably, the club's mixing board
was actually BEHIND the stage, so the
sound guy had to run out in front to
listen, and then go run backstage to go
change the levels. It was insane.)
Anyway, two minutes before the band was
about to walk onstage, Cody's nose
started bleeding profusely for no reason
at all. He tried everything he could -
bless his heart - but the blood just
wouldn't stop coming. The sound man was
screaming for the band to start their
set, so Cody stuck a bar napkin in his
nose and sat down behind the drums. As
soon as Buck Jones started their first
song, blood began flying all over the
place. All over his drums, all over his
shirt, the stage... Everybody that I had
invited - every single one of them-
looked over at me with a twisted,
startled "IS THIS PART OF THE SHOW?"
stare, and I just wanted to disappear.
It was a total comedy of errors. I just
felt so sorry for Cody and the band. It
had to be the low point of his career.
But you know what? He's still doing his
thing. Nine out of ten people probably
would have quit after that. He just
moved out to LA and shifted gears. He's
fearless. An
