Testimonials and Comments for Jon
various people would say to
me: "YOU KNOW JON SINGER!?"--as if that
were, somehow, remarkable. I
would therewith summon up my Wildean
aplomb and say: "No; he knows
/me/." Honor thus having been served, I
will further remark that I
never forget the time he and I made the
acquaintance of an old
Cupertino of no fixed abode who, for a
few coppers, pressed into our
hands that nonpareil compendium from
which we eventually published a
felicitous fragment, "Pyro Joe's _Hot
Flashes_". Now, that was in the
day when modems were 300 baud and you
could actually see the bits
rolling down the phone lines like tiny
bowling balls through a baby
python. But still. Those were, if not
_the_ days, certainly _days_.
Yes. Harumph. Without question. _Days_.
Sterling. Yes. Where's that
nurse with my brandy and cigars? Wheel
me into the shade, won't you,
there's a good child.
Show on Earth. If you don't know Jon,
you're missing a lot.
two degrees of Jon Singer. That is a
testimonial in and off itself, because
it speaks to Jon's intense interest in
everything and everyone - he's a global
magnet. He is an omnivore of life - a
little frightening in terms of sheer
intellect and ferocious curiosity, but
incredibly worth knowing. (I'm amazed to
be able to call him a friend: he's waaay
beyond me, but I won't quibble with his
taste...) Jump into Jon: it's a journey
well worth taking.
connected to everyone. Whether you're
attending a convention in Scotland,
eating out in Providence, or heck,
probably mountainclimbing in Tibet,
you're going to hear Jon stories, and
they're all going to be both amusing
and amazing, 'cause HE is.
wouldn't believe me unless you already
know him (which is statistically
likely). Suffice it to say that Jon has
some mutant gaze which he fixes upon you
which makes you feel totally special and
like burbling on about whatever you are
into, and he makes you feel like you are
interesting when you do so. On top of
that, he's into bazillions of
interesting things too... so, heck, you
really must be interesting to get such a
great response from him!
But mainly, he bought a con badge from
me, years ago, and I'm eternally grateful.
practically anything. He comes across as a
sort of super-friendly mad-scientist dabbler...
until you listen to him for a while and figure
out that he's done much more than dabble.
And then there's the fact that he knows
everyone. No, really. He's totally worth
knowing, but you can't understand why until
you do, since words cannot do him justice.
complete and utter genuineness. He
joyfully dives into many of his serious
interests, burbles about them to all (
both new acquaintances and old friends),
and treats everyone with deep respect
and appreciation. There's never any
question about how he feels, and he's
clearly so alive that no-one can feel
affronted when he's busy with a project
or spending time with someone else. All
that and unrealistically humble as
well... ;-)
I know. He's quite bright and has a
diverse set of hobbies. I really value
the chances I get to sit and talk with
him - conversations may interleave, and
the topics are widely varied. For a long
time he was the only person I knew who
would have so much overlap with myself
on so many obscure interests. Its
regrettable that we live on opposite
coasts - Jon is one of the folks that I
will run into, geek with about a number
of things in a short time window, and
then come away wanting to *do*
something, to play, to build. Very cool.
describe him in just a few words, I'd
swipe his to do it, and I'd say, "He is
a good egg." If that doesn't sum him
up in your mind, you simply haven't met
him yet. But you will... bazillions
have...
Singer.
Lasers, blue roses, pottery, science fiction -
he's an expert in all, and known within all
those circles, and more. He's a hub. He's
travelled to China to pick tea. He builds his
own lasers on his kitchen table. He taught me
to eat Sushi back in 1980 in Boulder. We took
Moroccan cooking classes from Rafih
Benjelloun in Boulder. Jon was my fifth
marriage. We worked together at Cray. NLP.

Gamelon. We worked together at Apple. He
wrote the book on ResEdit. "Here, smell this."
I'm proud to be a card-carrying member of the
Jon Singer Fan Club.
