my classmates call me julu

and it's because of my stupid nameplate


i'm 21 years old

born in a city south of metro manila

a city known for its coffee and its fan knife

but i grew up outside of the philippines

in a city where most men wear white and most women wear black

a city which have minarets rather than bell towers

a city which is frequented by sand storms rather than thunderstorms


i presently live in a place where people say

ga instead of ba

liban instead of tawid

tubal instead of maduming damit

kakaunin instead of susunduin

but still

i am proud to be a true blooded batangueno


i like the color green

not because it is the color of the US dollar

but because i think it is the color of life


i wish i can paint

but i know i am not a painter

i wish i could fly a plane

but all i can do is make a paper plane

i wish i can see mount fuji in person

but all i can do is to eat fuji apple


i am a product of miscalculation

along with all those that

were born as the second child

but still

whether we are the

eldest, the second, or the youngest

we are all products of love and lust
