Hidup ini kita lalui sekalipun kita tidak tahu banyak kejelasan dan kepastian tentang semuanya. Dan hanya dengan beginilah saya didorong memasuki pertanyaan dan bertanya apa yang saya cintai. Saya didorong oleh cinta untuk memahami apa yang saya cintai saat saya mencintai seseorang. Saya menjadi yang terkecil dalam cinta itu, bukan dalam arti saya suka (atau cinta) kalau saya dalam cinta, atau dalam percumbuan cinta tanpa komitmen, hidup bersama tanpa pernikahan, seks tanpa anak; bukan itu maksudnya. Tetapi saya dikepung oleh cinta, diraihnya, dan diambil keluar dari diri saya olehnya itu. Saya memahami bahwa semua ihwal tentang diri ada pada pengabdian ini, pemberian diri ini kepada sesuatu yang melampaui cinta diri-kepada saudaraku, semua saudara, tidak hanya kepada saudara kandungku sendiri. Juga kepada masa depan, dan kepada yang paling hina diantara kita. Dan saya tidak tahu apa pun, entah dikatakan demi nama Tuhan, atau keadilan, atau kekuatan. Sekalipun jika, pula bagi seluruh dunia, saya menjadi teman serba-serbi ateisme (Ini kalau kita masih berkutat pada pembedaan yang problematis ini, yaitu teisme versus ateisme). Saya malah tidak tahu!
