The school derived its name from San Mateo, the place where the school is located, and then later adopted St. Matthew as its patron saint. It is within the jurisdiction of Barangay Ampid, some few meters away from the provincial road. The school's location is quite ideal, away from the urban dangers of pedestrian traffic, commercial establishments and congested environment. Theair is unpolluted with each classroom being afforded ascenic view of the surrounding countryside. Recently described by the DepEd's NEAP Director as "School of the Future!".
