Friday at exactly 10 o’clock in the morning my sister received an emergency call from my brother’s friend in school who is our neighbor also. She said that my brother Marlon was rushed in La Vina Hospital, Inc., Valancia Bukidnon early in the morning for having a high fever. After that call, my sister had to go back from Cagayan de Oro to our place to inform my mother who was also working at that time. The two of them rushed to Valencia Bukidnon to be with my brother and it took two hours to reach that place from our place. Upon the arrival at the hospital my mother and sister was met by our neighbor at the entrance door of the hospital and brought them in the Morgue. My brother passed away thirty minutes prior to the arrival of my mother and sister in the hospital.

My brother was diagnosed to have Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). According to our family doctor it is a kind of blood cancer that commonly occurs in children and rarely appears in all age group. It is a kind of Leukemia whose patients bone marrows produces too many immature white blood cells than normal Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs) and platelets.

Everybody was shocked and confused that time because they don’t have any idea that my brother had a cancer and died. Even us his family couldn’t believe. My brother Marlon was known to be a swimmer in his college department and tasked to compete again for the intramurals. He always brought medals every time he competes. His friends knew him as a healthy and athletic one. Even in his childhood years since we grow together he was an honor student and player of track and field. I haven’t remembered any instance that he was brought in the hospital for having severe illness. In other words, he was an achiever and to think that he had a cancer is unbelievable.

My brother kept his illness from us and from his school friends, too. He fought his sickness alone. My brother knew that he had a cancer based from the laboratory results that we discovered from his stuffs. Up to my brothers death his only concern was us, his family. He didn’t tell anyone because he doesn’t want everybody will be worried for him. Our family struggled a lot of problems and loneliness for the past nine months because of the death of our father preceded by the death of my grandfather two weeks before the tragedy of my brother. The last time I’ve seen my brother alive was when he was about to leave and go back to school. I already noticed that he had big bruises in his buttocks and tiny ones in his arm and he looked pale. When I asked him about the bruises, he only answered me that he got it the last time he had a practice with his swimming team and hit it somewhere in the pool. Then, I didn’t asked for more because he is about to leave.

At the age of twenty my brother died of cancer without even undergoing any therapy. Everything happened so quickly. He was about to be submitted for blood transfusions for immediate care the moment the doctor determined that he had a very low hemoglobin count but unfortunately his body did not respond to any medicine injected to him.

What happened to my brother brought me and my family a lot of realizations. First, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) cancer is not only genetically inherited because both my mother and father’s side don’t have any history of any kind of cancer. It is caused by rapid change of cells in the bone marrow (as explained to us by the doctor). Rapid exposure to radiation and toxins constitutes to the change of the cells in the bone marrow. Second, to be conscious and aware when it comes to health because everyone without exemption could be affected with cancer. And lastly, LOVE one another because you won’t know that your love one will be lost in just one snap of your fingers. No breath can be bought. It cannot be deposited (like a bill in the bank) and then withdrawn for tomorrow. So cherish and make use of every minute of your life. Life is a gift and a privilege.
