Shannon appeared on my radio show last year and insisted that I play a Journey tune. No lie. I tried to make him see reason, but my efforts were fruitless. Still, I love the guy to death. How can you not? Without Shannon in town, Portland would be a soulless shell, the west coast version of Kokomo, bereft of culture and ironic detachment.

I look up to Shannon because his
dream is simple and he has been
reckless and relentless in sacrificing
everything to achieve it. To live a life
of independent sloth. But in a really
good way. To saying Fuck You to the
Man is one (very small) thing. But
Shannon murmurs Fuck You and
then actually fucks the Man. Well
figuratively (usually.) And that is the
best and truest and most viable Fuck
You of all. I'm proud of him and I'm
usually never wrong about people.

I've never understood a single word
that comes out of Shannon's mouth.
Whenever he talks I just smile, nod my
head, and say, "Uh-huh." Yet despite my
inability to grasp what he's saying, we
are still friends. And that's a
beautiful thing.
