About Me:
I fancy myself as an arbiter of kids' fashions. All the parenting books I read say to let your two year olds express themselves by picking out their own outfits. After all, we don't want to stifle their little creative spirits, do we? Wrong-o. I just can't follow that advice. How could I let Spencer go out in public in a glow in the dark Thomas the Tank Engine t-shirt paired with University of Illinois pajama bottoms and doggy slippers? Especially when, hanging in his closet are rows upon rows of luscious hand-knit sweaters, Imp classic shirts, cotton Splendid Ts, khakis from Crewcuts, Florence Eiseman overalls and E-Land rugbys.
I know I sound shallow, but I just can't help it. You see, I was born and bred in the world of kids' fashion. When I was growing up, my mom and step-dad owned and operated Wee Ones Inc., the very best girls' hair accessories company in the world (or so we like to think). I came of age during a time when children's fashion totally transformed, giving way to a whole slew of talented young designers whose creations went beyond the typical silhouettes ascribed to children. Kids started looking hip and it has been fascinating to watch.
Today, I continue to be intrigued with the business of kids clothing in my new role as president of Wee Ones. I definitely have my opinions on what is and is not appropriate dress for kids. Like, no little girl with any amount of hair should ever leave the house without a bow (of one size or another). No screen-printed writing on t-shirts. No maribou on kids under 3 and no "character tennis shoes for little boys. Just my opinion.
I do do other things besides judging what other people's children wear. I shop.
