ME IN YOUR LIST OF FRIENDS. The real
reason why I'm posting a testimonial is
because I want to prove a theory of
mine. Because based on my observation,
a long comment in one's profile will
most likely provide 2 positive results.
First is that you, the recipient of
this testimonial, would be seen as a
great, friendly and interesting person,
and second, I, the provider would be
seen as a smart and appreciative
friend. This is possible because around
75% of the people who would see this
extremely long comment would find it
tiresome to actually read. Most likely,
they will just read the first and last
sentence, and deduce that this is about
you being such a great friend. So you
now understand why the friendly opening
statement, and, later on, the warm
closing remark. Now going back, the
next group is the 20% who will actually
try to scan this paragraph. Though
based on most studies, only a handful
really knows how to scan effectively,
and thus most of the "scanners" would
also fall for our opening/closing
sentence technique. Though, I would
still use a modest estimate and assume
that only half of the "scanners" (10%)
will fail to understand this comment.
And lastly, the remaining 5% are those
few who would actually read this whole
paragraph. They are either the people
who have nothing else better to do (I'm
one of those), or the few whose very
instinct dictates them to read
everything within a 4 mile radius (I
guess you belong in this group). We
cannot do anything about this 5%,
though we are still rather lucky
because they only comprise a small
chunk of our population. Now for our
conclusion: Based on the percentages
above, 85% (75% + 10%) of the people
who will see this extremely long
comment would assume that you are such
a great, friendly, and interesting
girl, and I, on the other hand, am a
smart and appreciative friend.
Therefore, with such a high yield, this
extremely long yet utterly senseless
testimonial should always be present in
your profile. Now on to our very
important closing sentence, I've also
thrown in 3 smiley faces for good
