I first met Vanessa the summer of 1997 when she was being dropped off by her family at "nerd camp." I remember thinking, 'this is one fashion conscious family', taking a moment to appreciate Vanessa's well moisturized skin, her meticulous hair and nails and accepting, 'just look at me. she'll never be my friend.' However, after our very first conversation (which spanned three solid days) Vanessa had for the first (certainly not the last) time proved me wrong. Hers was a profound genius and sensitivity to the world. We weren't just friends, we were soul mates. I will never forget our many summer afternoons moving fluidly from discussions over Wittgenstein to imaginary (yet quite physical) battles over the "Stone of Regret" as "Grendelar" and "Queen Valeska." Vanessa is my best friend and I am terribly jealous of anyone and everyone who has had the chance to spend more time with her than I have.

Vanessa saw fit to make me her friend, at a time in my life when I could be pretty awful to about everyone I knew. I'm damn lucky. I can think of few in my life who command as much of my respect, and none who can make me laugh as hard. We don't get much face time these days, but I hope she knows that she is truly always in my thoughts, and that I love her.

I know Vanessa well enough to say that her claim of "squealing with delight on occasion" is an understatement of massive proportions. Also, her laugh is so infectious, it should be registered with FEMA and the CDC. What a truly wonderful person is she.

Ah Vanessa, philosophy genius who
kindly treated me as though we were
equals in that esoteric study. What
can I say? we were the philosophy smack
down TEAM in the Stout class!! Dr.
Laura!?! and "This book was just
stupid"; remember the collective horror
Vanessa!??? I still get faint thinking
about it. Well, aside from her genius,
she is an awesome person, funny, and
driven (and looking very glam in her
picture, grad school agrees with her).
I'm just honored to be her friend!

So Vanessa rocks in a number of ways,
and is definitely one of the coolest
people in America. Admittedly I've
only been here for a few months, but,
well, you know. I'm sure it's true.

That said, she has a strange taste in
food. Who in their right mind would
choose pineapple with cayenne pepper,
salt and lime over a nice bit of
balsamic sushi or Branston pickle?
