      • I met young Jon in 2001, sometime after 9/11. We were both riding the No.8 Halsted St. bus, headed south: beyond the area where reasonable WhiteFolk traveled, even in the safety of their own vehicle. We were on our way to work. Work - It was in an old barn on the SouthSide of Chicago that was now the home to dozens of motorized trolley cars. The oil stained floors and the odor of diesel fuel mixed well with the putrid morning coffee that was offered to us out of a rusty spiggot. John and I wore identical jackets, thin windbreakers colored hunter green with the "Olde-Tyme" Chicago Trolley logo on it. If we had been sporting handlebar mustaches our pay would be $1.40 more per hour. An additional fifty cents an hour was on the table, per mutton-chop, to those who dared. Jon and I sat near each other on the bus. He was very, very white at that time.
