remember a story that I always call to
mind when I'm looking for inspiration
and hope. She said:
"The memories of my family outings are
still a source of strength to me. I
remember we'd all pile into the car -
I forget what kind it was - and drive
and drive. I'm not sure where we'd go,
but I think there were some trees
there. The smell of something was
strong in the air as we played
whatever sport we played. I remember a
bigger, older guy we called 'Dad'.
We'd eat some stuff, or not, and then
I think we went home. I guess some
things never leave you."
the premise that combining three parts
beautiful people with two parts
awkward situations, one part jokes
stolen from the Marx Brothers, and a
laugh track makes funny. It almost
never works. But we still watch,
because we want to see these plastic
sorts extract themselves from overtime
at the pizza parlor and humping
monkeys and ugly sweaters with a
raised eyebrow and a catchphrase, and
then go back to normal the following
week for another round of hijinks.
There's an alternative, though, for
those of us lucky enough to know
Nora. Simultaneously erudite and
hilarious, Nora Is It. And you don't
even need a laughtrack to know what's
funny.
