In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the need to reorder Americas priorities is more important than ever. Katrina and its destruction exposed the significant and daunting unmet needs faced by countless Americans for a good education, decent jobs, healthcare, transportation, child care, nutrition and housing. Addressing these needs represents an emergency of immense proportions and represents an opportunity for Congress to set appropriate American priorities.

The Emergency Campaign for Americas Priorities (ECAP) is a short-term national campaign formed by organizations committed to an aggressive grassroots, grass-tops, public relations and lobbying campaign to convince Congress to stop a plan backed by President Bush and the Republican Congressional leadership that would drastically cut programs that primarily benefit the poor and middle class to finance tax cuts that benefit only the wealthiest among us.

ECAP will pressure Members of Congress to oppose reconciliation, its reckless budget cuts and its irresponsible tax cuts that would bankrupt this country at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens. The campaign will include pro-active national, statewide and local campaigns aimed at various Members of Congress who represent potential swing votes on the package of tax and spending cuts proposed by the Republican leadership and backed by President Bush. This temporary campaign will be aggressive, agile and quickly galvanize many other organizations around the country for this Emergency Campaign for Americas Priorities.
