Big Bang 빅뱅

Before debuting in 2006, Big Bang trained together for two years, including rejected member SO-1. However, G-Dragon and Taeyang had known each other and had been training together since 2001, and they both knew TOP before Big Bang training began.

Big Bang replaced Se7en’s dance team for two performances of Oh No in June 2006. Even that brief glimpse caught the attention of the fans, who had been hearing rumors about GDYB’s debut in YG’s new group.

Big Bang was officially introduced to the Korean public through a reality show called Big Bang Documentary, which ran from July 15th to August 13th and was aired online on GomTV and on MTV Korea. The concept was simple - among the six trainees, Hyun Suk intended to pick at least four to make Big Bang. The show revolved mostly around the staff evaluating the trainees, along with some (rather forced) personal conflicts and glimpses of the trainees’s personal lives.

The show had ten episodes, plus a bonus eleventh episode released after Big Bang’s debut. The show started out introducing the group, then focused one episode on each member of the group and drew out the tension before finally announcing the results. Seung Ri and SO-1 were originally cut, but they were both given a chance to impress Hyun Suk and make it back into the group. Seung Ri managed to charm YG, but SO-1 was let go, mainly because despite being a good singer with a pretty face, he was too shy onstage. To celebrate the end of the trials, Hyun Suk gave them each a custom pendant.

Then, on August 19th, Big Bang officially debuted with their first showcase held at a YG Family concert. Afterwards, the original plan was to release five singles in five months, from August to December, with each member having a solo song. However, YG being YG, only three singles were released. With the third one having been delayed from October to November and Big Bang’s first concert approaching in December, it wasn’t surprising.

After their first concert near New Year’s Day, Big Bang’s first album was released in January 2007, and their first live album followed soon after. With their popularity growing even faster than expected, Big Bang were soon busy with performances, radio shows, a six-month advertising contract with Tony An (ex-HOT)’s school uniform company Skoolooks, a three-month advertising contract with Fila for reportedly 300 million won each, and plans for a Japanese debut beginning to take form.

In April 2007, Big Bang had a test live in Japan, at Daikanyama Unit, and the reaction was good, so their first Japanese album was planned. As it turns out, this will be not so much a Japanese debut as a Japanese debut with international goals. The album consists of their hits re-recorded in English with one new song, How Gee, and the members acquired new stage names for the occasion. “For the World” is set to be released January 4th, 2008, and a show at Tokyo’s JCB Hall has been announced for March 28 and 29. They also have a new Japanese website.

In May, they released a BB bud fragrance, following in Se7en’s footsteps. The fragrance was a best-seller, and recently, a whole line of BB bud skincare products came out. They also started their first tour, the Want You tour, which covered five cities in Korea.

In August, their first mini album, Always, came out. The title track Keojitmal was their biggest hit yet, earning them MKMF Video Music Awards for Best Male Group and Song Of The Year. A full album was announced for November, but that turned out to be another mini-album, Hot Issue, which featured another G-Dragon/Brave Brother collaboration as a title track. Big Bang also had the honor of being the first musicians allowed by Seo Taiji to sample his music. (Of course, Yang Hyun Suk’s connection to Seo Taiji was the main reason they could even think of asking.)
