A little more than the story of a country boy in a big city environment, Suzuka tracks the woes of new kid Yamato Akitsuki at Aoba High School. He's often called generally irresponsible, but at his core Yamato's a free spirit who doesn't want to live a life where rules and expectations get in the way of creativity and free thought. He's the type of guy who simply attends to his personal responsibilities as they relate to him or those he associates with. To be more specific, Yamato is a nice guy, but he values maintaining a balance between caring for his individuality and his care for others above all else. As his Aunt Ayano commented to him, "Your desire to help is one of your most endearing qualities."
This value of balance is put to the test when he meets track & field gal Suzuka Asahina. Yamato, who takes up residence at his aunt's bathhouse/dormitory, finds himself taken with the promising high jump athlete who just so happens to be going to the same high school as he. When he first espies her, she's out in the field practicing, and Yamato is immediately drawn in by the gravity of her svelte, limber beauty. (Something should perhaps be said about the mute sexuality of the high jump, the hustle and pant of a slender young woman who twists and bends, arcs and exhausts her body to incredible angles and humbling heights.)
Regardless, Yamato sees the girl, falls for the girl, meets the girl (at home) as she lives in the apartment next to him and meets the girl (at school) as she resides in the same homeroom as he. Suzuka herself is an intelligent but insecure young woman. She feels the pressure of becoming a star athlete and despises it. Knowing that there are schools of relatives and other individuals cheering her on, only raising her expectations with every passing day, Suzuka Asahina has been made rather bitter and resentful of the guidance of others; resulting in a quasi-emotional state where it's going to take someone as simple-minded and/or genuinely soft-hearted as Yamato to crack her shell .
Suzuka is a fun watch for many reasons, the chieftest of which lies in the relationship between Yamato and Suzuka. Though the series winds a competent dichotomy of drama and comedy around its theme of sports expectations and goals, the story itself goes nowhere unless either Yamato or Suzuka are in picture. Yamato struggles to show Suzuka that he cares about her without coming off as an insensitive jerk, while Suzuka does what she can to incorporate as much of Yamato in her life as possible, without coming off as over- reliant up on him. Suzuka's stability as an individual of immense drive is rarely at an even keel in the absence of Yamato.
Suzuka is a bit cocky at the start of the series and for the most part, she has every right to be. She's the scouted athlete that every one anticipates will be the best of the region. But with these internal and external pressures to succeed also come an array of indecisiveness that cannot be quelled alone; and whether she realizes it or not, Yamato at present seems to be the only person capable of settling this indecisiveness. The more Suzuka gets to know Yamato, the more she softens. And as I anticipate the rest of Suzuka, I hope that this complimentary nature of these two characters is only made better (or alternatively, more complicated) by their comfortableness with one another.
