About Me:
I'm a high school English teacher in Baltimore, a baseball coach, a waiter, and a house concert host. Life is good!
I grew up in Michigan, mostly in a SW corner beach town called South Haven, but a few years in the Detroit area. I went to college at Michigan State, where my big thing was probably residence life; I worked as an RA, ASAC, and Asst. Hall Director over four years. Being involved in all that was definitely influential in my becoming a teacher, and cemented some great friendships.
My time at MSU also got me involved in indie music, as I started a music venue in the basement of my dorm where a bunch of cool people played. Since I moved to Baltimore, I've had monthly house concerts with national artists performing in my living room. Check out http://holdenslair.blogspot.com - all invited!
After student teaching in Lansing City Public Schools and loving it, I knew I was most interested in urban education in my career pursuits. I threw a dart in a map, aiming in the south somewhere, and ended up in Baltimore. I got placed at a great school where I don't feel like I'm banging my head against the wall (great, flexible curriculum; sweet kids; superb colleagues), and have been there for five years. I also coach baseball and run Outward Bound, and was voted "Most Involved Teacher" by this year's seniors. And I truly love my job, even the year I was worried about getting laid off everyday or even this year when I don't even have a classroom, and live a pretty happy life.
I'm known for my Charlie Brown-esque misadventures and my triumphs over them. Like the time I got sued for $10,000 on a total BS case involving a fake dog bite and couldn't afford a lawyer and went to court to fight it and won while representing myself. Or the time my retinas detached and had major eye surgeries to prevent blindness and just put on my sunglasses afterwards and missed only three days of school. I just soldier on, my optimism and integrity intact.

Who I Want to Meet:
I'm seeking interesting people, a workout partner, and anything else that might come my way via here. Pleasant surprises welcome. I love baseball, movies (The Charles), theater, live music, hanging out in chill bars (Brewer's Art, Thirsty Dog, Slainte), going to the gym, going out to eat, and animals.

this guy?? He is the epitome of cool.
This guy has got a great taste in movies
and music, he has a great sense of
humor, and is just a fun guy to hang
with. Not to mention you're talking
about the founder of the Common Grounds
Coffee House in Akers Hall! Random note
is that he's got the most distinct laugh
you'll ever hear. All in all, great guy,
and his students are blessed to have a
teacher like him out there!
writing style is so unique I'm not sure
if anyone could ever duplicate it
(1993). I'm sure he's a wonderful
teacher too (1993), and has no trouble
teaching his kids about english and
about life, while keeping it
interesting. Mark has been a great
friend to my fiancee Danielle (1993) for
well over 11 years and to myself for the
past one plus I guess it is now (sorry
ended my sentence with a preposition
teach). And thank god he's not a
Yankees fan (1993), those guys tryly are
an Evil Empire. He works extra at a mean
little bean called Zee (1993), and I
hear he's one of the "big time bloggers"
that Ed Helms is always looking for
(another preposition). All totaled Mark
is fab, though you gotta wonder about a
baseball coach who roots for the Tigers
(1993). But I'm sure Mark is such a
great guy that he'll have no problem
accepting this tounge in cheek
re-cheeked testimonial.
and "fun". But he is also eeeviiilll.
He will take your food and throw it
away. He will send you emails twice.
He will tell you that sarcasm is the
lowest form of humor after you have JUST
BEEN sarcastic. He will send you
pictures of yourself looking stupid.
Okay, okay, okay. So maybe Mark is only
1 percent evil. And he tends to keep
his devilish impurity under wraps. He
is more likely to hand you a "superstar"
sticker and laugh at all your lame jokes
and organize fun outings, such as
wiffleball. And Mark is really brave.
Like when he went blind and got sued.
He just decided to put on some shades
and make like Perry Mason. Mark is 99
percent perfect.
being both cool AND nice, as well as
being a baseball coach AND an
english teacher. A study in
contradictions or just ahead of his
time? Either way, he's got my vote.
really great book that will someday be
the centerpiece of a high school
English curriculum based around the
themes of compassion, folk music, and
the Detroit Tigers. I can only hope
that my character in the book is
dynamic, round, and perhaps a foil.
strangest life, yet he is such an apple
pie kind of boy that you can't help but
root for him, even when he gets sued.
He will eclipse Roger Ebert someday,
I'm sure of it.
