I have 22 piercings, but only use 4 of them. Often, the process interests me more than the product. Also, biking in the rain, the kids I teach, boots, huge cats, retro sneakers, watching my posse kick ass in their art form of choice, Uwajimaya, hair product, tattoos, quitting smoking (REPEATEDLY), escaping to Greenlake, Maker's Mark, living downtown, sandalwood incense, mix tapes, cinematic moments, seeing clearly, brass instruments, catharsis, effortless relationships, inexplicable inspiration, really connecting with an audience, Sunday Nights at Bush Gardens, escaping the ideological state apparatus.

In the end, it always comes back to The Secret History. Other favorites are Stand on Zanzibar and anything by Haruki Murakami, Edward Albee, or Adrienne Rich. A recent foray into all things metaphysical included a book on important women in the Sufi tradition. Also, kids' books rule, especially when they're dark and fucked-up.

I love twisted plotlines, complicated characters, unconventional-looking actors, and unique cinematic aesthetics. Combine those with an element of self-aware kitsch, slap it on VHS, and I probably own it.

Fiona Apple, the Decemberists, Gorillaz, Beck, Mike Doughty, The Killers, Rilo Kiley, Josh Joplin Group, Princess Superstar, Poe, The Brunettes, Tracy Bonham, Concrete Blonde, Ted Leo/Pharmacists, Nat King Cole, the So-and-So's, the Goondocks, Busta Rhymes, Spyplane (RIP), Roger Miller, MC Paul Barman, and musicals involving singing puppets.

Cable-free since August 2004, and my brain is still thanking me. Before that, Six Feet Under - because everyone tells me that I remind them of Brenda. Oh, and Triumph. No matter how intellectual I might like to think I am, the whole "to poop on!" thing gets me every time.

Sagittarius

If something frightens me, I may force myself to go through with it as a matter of principle. I try to be decisive, but it often turns into impulsive. I have "Beauty is Terror" permanently inked on my body, so I don't ever forget. I get bored very easily and need constant self-imposed stimulation to feel at home in my life. Whether this means hairdye, body modification, or picking up a new skill (watercolor, karaoke, guitar, cornet, improv, studying something obscure, whatever) this is the way I keep myself feeling alive. I swear by the philosophy that "It is never too late to become what you might have been." (-George Eliot) I reserve the right to act, sing, teach, fight, fuck, learn, love, drink, dance, scream, create, and evolve until the day I die... and if I leave something tangible behind as a result, that's okay too.
