Also once known as fusion, nu-jazz and new adult contemporary played on the “downtempo” side, smooth jazz has evolved into one of the major formats in FM radio – combining the appeal of mainstream music with the purist sound of hardcore jazz, utilizing instruments and vocal improvisation meshed with stylistic influences rooted in funk, pop and R&B.

Emerging from the liquid sound of chillout, XFM has now transformed itself into the hub of the smooth jazz market – a reflection of the preferences of its sophisticated audience base from their twenties to their forties. Weaving its contemporary jazz playlist intricately with the sound of cool pop and rhythm n’ blues, and spanning decades from the 70s up to the most current, XFM proffers a select and distinctive sound that’s neither obtrusive nor monotonous – the perfect aural backdrop for people in their workplaces, or to complement their laidback weekends at home. This “light” sound is the new sound of XFM – a mix that ultimately hits the mark with busy urban audiophiles in the metro.

With program features under way (Samba Sundays, World Music Weekends, Chillout Fridays, Retro Saturdays), blueprints for keeping in step with new media technologies (including greater multimedia access via satellite link) and a flurry of marketing and promotional events to be mounted expect more exciting things to come from the new XFM92.3
