        Meaning of Islam

        THE RELIGION OF ISLAM

The first thing that one should know and clearly understand about
Islam is what the word 'Islam' itself means. The religion of Islam is
not named after a person as in the case of Christianity which was
named after Jesus Christ, Buddhism after Gotama Buddha, Confucianism
after Confucius, and Marxism after Karl Marx. Nor was it named after a
tribe like Judaism after the tribe of Judah and Hinduism after the
Hindus. Islam is the true religion of 'Allah' and as such, its name
represents the central principle of Allah's 'God's' religion; the
total submission to the will of Allah 'God'. The Arabic word 'Islam'
means the submission or surrender of one's will to the only true god
worthy of worship 'Allah' and anyone who does so is termed a 'Muslim',
The word also implies 'peace' which is the natural consequence of
total submission to the will of Allah. Hence, it was not a new
religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), but only the true religion of Allah re-expressed in
        its final form.

        Five Pillars of Islam

The Five Pillars of Islam are the framework of the Muslim life.
They are the testimony of faith, prayer, giving zakat (support of the needy),
fasting during the month of Ramadan,
and the pilgrimage to Makkah once in a lifetime for those who are able.

        1) The Testimony of Faith:

The testimony of faith is saying with conviction,
“La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah.”
This saying means “There is no true god
(deity) but God (Allah),1 and Muhammad
is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.”
A simple formula which should be said
with conviction in order to convert to Islam

        2) Prayer:

Muslims perform five prayers a day.
Each prayer does not take more than
a few minutes to perform. Prayer in Islam is
a direct link between the worshipper and God.
There are no intermediaries between God and the worshipper.

        3) Giving Zakat (Support of the Needy):

All things belong to God, and wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust.
The original meaning of the word zakat is both ‘purification’ and ‘growth.’
Giving zakat means ‘giving a specified percentage on certain
properties to certain classes of needy people.’

        4) Fasting the Month of Ramadan:

Every year in the month of Ramadan,4 all Muslims fast from dawn until sundown,
abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations.
Although the fast is beneficial to health,
it is regarded principally as a method of spiritual self-purification.

        5) The Pilgrimage to Makkah:

The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah is an obligation once
in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able
to perform it. About two million people go to Makkah each year
from every corner of the globe. Although Makkah is always filled
with visitors, the annual Hajj is performed in the twelfth month
of the Islamic calendar. Male pilgrims wear
special simple clothes which strip away distinctions of class and culture so that all stand equal before God.

This picture is taken by the NASA Hubble Space Telescope of the
"Cat's Eye Nebula." It is an exploding star 3,000 light years away.
They should have called it the "Oily Red Rose Nebula."

The miracle mentioned in the beginning of Sura Al-Qamar (the moon) about the split of the moon [54:1] ‘The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam) to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon)’.
