The prime force behind the Jakarta International Jazz Festival was Indonesian guitarist and bandleader Ireng Maulana. Ireng took a good idea that had been kicking around for years and made it reality. Over a year, Ireng Maulana and a group of close friends decided that the idea of such an international festival in Jakarta was too tantalizing to remain just a dream. They formed a steering committee to plan the extravaganza that would, in time, come to be known as “JAKJAZZ’88”.

JakJazz is an annual festival celebrating jazz in Jakarta - Indonesia every late November/early December represents a truly exciting multi-cultural and international event, while maintaining its unique, down home charm and intimacy. A one-of-a-kind: an eclectic and eccentric jazz festival - a lovingly crafted, open air, intimated yet festive - tailor-made for friendly crowd from all walks of life.

From the beginning, JAKJAZZ has grown to become one of Indonesia's most popular festival; attracting large crowds each year it was held (1988, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2006, 2007)

JAKJAZZ 2006 - was held on November 24 through 26 was certainly unforgettable and a success. The overall event attendance for 2006 was over 45,000. a truly great cap after an 8-years hiatus.

JAKJAZZ 2007 - In its 9th edition, JakJazz boasted close to 50,000 loyal audiences from Jakarta and many cities in Indonesia.

JakJazz is known to have such a soul to it, such a community behind it and has feature some of the best jazz music talents
