AFS activities in Indonesia was initiated by Wartomo Dwijoyuwono, who in 1956 together with Mohammad Dipenogoro and Ibrahim Kadir were invited by
the American Government to participate in the Youth Specialists Program, Nebraska for four and a half months. In Nebraska, Wartomo met with several students from various European countries, who were participating in the AFS program, and he then initiated Indonesia participation in that program.

Whereas in the beginning Indonesia sent only seven students (including Z.A. Maulani from Banjarmasin and Taufiq Ismail from Pekalongan) on AFS Year Program, the number has now expanded to (hopefully) more than a hundred participants (again) next year, in the Year Programs as well as Short Programs.

With more than 13 widely-spread Chapter across Indonesia, Bina Antarbudaya itself was founded on May 2, 1985 by Taufiq Ismail, Tanri Abeng, Irid Agoes, Kartono Muhammad and Sophie Gunawan Satari. Bina Antarbudaya saw the importance of having a legal body with a national identity. Born on the National Education Day, Bina Antarbudaya positioned itself as an educational organization, just when the need for cross cultural knowledge was increasing in the global interaction.
