In the heydays of recycled and stereotyped punk rock in 2003,five Naguenos all hailing from the Ateneo de Naga University offered a welcome option from the nauseating din---Centerfold.

From former Evanescence campus soundalike, the quintet comprised of guitarists Carlo “Khatz” Catimbang and Deannel Baracena, drummer Rojay Jesus “RJ” Rosin, bassist/multi-instrumentalist Edgar “Eboy” Badiola, and vocalist Ma. Vanessa “Van” Navarro later perfected their own brand of pop with a rough edge.

Downing a bottle of Kalibog, an bubblegum version of lambanog is the closest comparison to the Centerfold aural experience--- saccharine yet kicks you hard in the head.

The fact is underscored by the arrival of Lloyd Seminiano as a more than fitting heir to RJ’s vacated drum stool upon the latter’s graduation from college. Lloyd’s relentless yet precise style honed by years of keeping the beat for Naga punk legends Pennies for Jane provided the much-needed spunk for the band’s rhythm section.

While Vanessa’s vocal acrobatics maybe Centerfold’s tour de force , it is Khatz and Eboy’s sonic engineering prowess which has really shaped the group as a promising act to watch. Promising enough to be invited to perform at MTV Siesta and Studio 23’s Breakfast ,not to mention the inclusion of one of their song in Alpha Record’s Silver Shiny Jeepney Collection.

More than two years have passed since the release of their independently produced debut Uno Diyez , and still Centerfold ,rather than rest on their laurels,opted to re-invent their sound further--- neo-hardcoresque wall of guitar noise over a well-oiled rhythm section punctuated by Van’s lilting and contemplative wails. And like the sweet lambanog brand you can’t help but get intoxicated.
