1-Poor independent artists barely making it because no one recognizes or appreciates their artistic expression, their not doin' it for any commercial purpose though
2-Spit conscious, intelligent lyrics and have no gangsta tendencies
3-Have love and respect for the culture,
4-Have mastered their rhyme skillz.
5- Seem obligate to defend values of the culture.

For the most part the underground for many is where true hip hop heads go to get the real essence the culture.
To be considered underground is a step above the mainstream and proof that you did not sell out.
