yoshimori

The main character. Yoshimori is a 14-year old middle school boy who is the 22nd kekkaishi of the Sumimura family. Has remarkable strength and stamina but lacks accuracy. He also has picked up the hobby of making chocolate castles, and is getting good at it. It is also stated during the series, both by his grandfather (Shigemori Sumimura) and his older brother (Masamori Sumimura) that he has remarkable latent abilities in both the capacity of his kekkai energy and its techniques (possibly one of the greatest kekkaishi's in terms of power). Also it is noted that he is clumsy, lazy and is in love with Tokine but he hasn't told her that yet. He is also desperately trying to protect Tokine all the time due to the fact that she was hurt once in the past protecting him. Since then, he strives to be more powerful and a better user of the kekkai in order to be able to protect her. He also states that he wants to seal Karasumori's power so that Tokine won't be hurt ever again.

Aids Tokine and Yoshimori in hunting ayakashi. Integrated half ayakashi. Almost killed his sister when he was 10 years old. Taken in by the Night Troops.

tokine

Yoshimori's friend. Tokine is 16 and she is the 22nd kekkaishi of the Yukimura family. She has a scar on her right arm due to protecting Yoshimori five years ago. She has good accuracy but does not have as much power as Yoshimori. She has also an affection towards Yoshimori shown by her protecting him various times when he was younger (that's why she has a scar on her right hand). She also likes to tease him and isn't aware of his feelings for her, although throughout the series she shows signs of interest towards Yoshimori. Also in some battles she is very impressed by the power Yoshimori has but she gets frustrated because he doesn't know how to use it well. In the series it is stated that whilst she is the weakest Kekkaishi, she is also the most ruthless.

madarao

The Sumimura family's demon dog; he detects ayakashi with his sense of smell. He is about 500 years old. Madarao was previously known by the name of Ginro (銀露, Ginro?) and was at one time friends with Koya. He currently wears a collar that seals away his true demon form. When unsealed, Madarao is a competent poison user and avid illusionist.

hakubi

The Yukimura family's demon dog; he detects demons with his sense of smell. He is about 400 years old. He does not like men and is constantly insulting Yoshimori. Hakubi also enjoys teasing Madarao about having to serve a master (Yoshimori) with such pathetic skills. He constantly flirts with Tokine and likes to call her 'honey'.
