decade ago on the vast ice fields north
of Smolensk. The moon was waning
gibbous that night, casting long,
unsettling shadows across the cracked
Siberian tundra. Three of my best sled
dogs had already succumbed to the cold
when I saw him, an inky silhouette on
the horizon, motionless save for his
long, leather cloak slowly shifting in
the cautious wind. Six years later we
met again in Tuscon, crouched over a
body spilling red life out onto the hot
blacktop, shell casings everywhere.
