Walking down Orchard Road today, it can be quite shocking to realise that all the shopping centres, hotels and attractive buildings that you see around you were mostly built less than 30 years ago. It is even more amazing to learn that Orchard Road has been transformed many times before.
In the beginning, like all of Singapore, Orchard Road was covered with dense forest.
The area was stripped of its orginal jungle vegetation by early settlers and planted with gambier. What you would have seen then were barren hills covered with the gambier plants.
