About Me:
I was a 13.5 pound baby born in Hoboken, NJ, after a difficult delivery that nearly killed me. But I survived, and by the early 1930s I had started singing in social clubs and roadhouses in the area. I had bigger dreams though, and by 1937 I had landed my own radio show. 1939 saw me get married to my girlfriend Nancy, and was when I joined up with band leader Tommy Dorsey. With the war raging, bobby soxers came to idolize me, and before I knew it I had become a household name.
I left the Dorsey band and ventured out as a solo act in the early 40s. Between constant touring and a burgeoning acting career, my marriage began to suffer. During the late 40s my wife became aware of my infidelity as I saw other women, particularly Ava Gardner. Nancy and I separated and finally divorced. Ava and I were married immediately. Ava and I were passionately in love, but also fought ferociously. After less than a year of marriage we separated, though we didn't divorce for another five years.
The 1950s saw the rise of the Rat Pack. "In order to qualify, said Lauren Bacall, "one had to be addicted to nonconformity, staying up late, drinking, laughing, and not caring what anyone thought or said or us. Some of my most famous songs and movies were recorded during those years. I started spending more time at the Sands in Vegas, singing sold out shows every night. By 1960 I became close friends with JFK, and pulled some strings to help him win the Democratic nomination.
Though I officially retired in 1971, I continued to record and play concerts, saw several more marriages, and spent most of my time in Palm Springs. When I passed away at age 82 in 1998, my final words were, "I'm losing. Of course I haven't lost though, because my legacy continues to live through my songs and movies. To my fans around the world, I will always be known as "The Voice.
