the LOVE OF SIAM is a romantic yet REALISTIC drama between 2 lovers
trapped in a world where they have to cope everything
and face life as how it should be...

at this point, gender is not a basis... LOVE is....
it doesn't matter who are you with... BUT the lessons you may gain
out of the relationship. Not to be afraid of facing the world
accompanied the sorrows and pains it might brings you...

Hoding the only armor that GOD has showered us from the very begining
and still living within us. and that is LOVE.. as what mew said on his song...
that he read from a poem " If there is love there is hope" and we should keep on holding...
Dont be afraid of loving and loosing someone by letting him go...
though its hurt ...YES!! Its really hurt,..

        4 Romance: No tricks, please

What is it with teen romances these days - why can't they just be about teens, and love the way they used to be?

Writing at the Pantip webboard, a Thai youngster says promotional stills for the upcoming movie 4 Romance, starring Mario Maurer and 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul among others, are cute, the way a teen movie should be.

However, he is afraid the movie will actually be more serious, in the style of the family gay drama, Love of Siam, which was much heavier than the trailer let on.

The trailer for Love of Siam disguised the fact that the relationship at the centre of the film was not boy-girl at all, but gay.

'Judging by audience reactions as they watched the film, some were disgusted - they were not warned to expect a gay kiss - while others were surprised, but egged them on.

'Other, innocent types took Mum and Dad along, expecting to see a feel-good teen romance - but after seeing the kiss scene, had to ask Mum and Dad what was going on,' he wrote.

In Mario's second film, Friendship - promoted in the same way, as just another bubbly teen romance - the female lead was raped, contracted Aids, and died.

The Pantip reader hopes 4 Romance can stick to form and just make audiences happy. He does not want the film to veer into heavy drama - or if it has to go that way, it should at least warn audiences.

Has the traditional feel-good teen romance format - Seasons Change comes to mind - had its day? Why do film companies feel the need to get realistic?

Postscript: Here's a pretty song [link harvested - it died], supposedly from Love of Siam (though it wasn't in the film, or on the soundtrack). Called Nostalgic Dream (ยังอยู่ในใจ บอยตรัย), I suspect it comes from the band August. I found at the Pantip webboard, posted without any explanation.

      LATEST UPDATE:
      Mario pulls out of Roommate

Thai actor and model Mario Maurer has pulled out of a starring role in the dramatic comedy Roommate, according to one media report.

Mono Film, the company making the movie, kept putting off the start of filming. Teen superstar Mario's busy schedule allows some flexibility for delays, but not this much. In the end he asked to be released from the film.

Roommate, to be directed by Piti Jaturapat, is adapted from Andrew Fleming's 1994 movie Threesome.

Mario sprang to fame playing a gay male lead in the coming-of-age drama, Love of Siam.

The Thai entertainment press says Mario agreed to act in Roommate after turning down the chance to play in the remake of Boonchu 9, which follows the adventures of a young man from the provinces who travels to Bangkok to study.

Boonchu 9 did well at the box office. Now Roommate, for Mario at least, is no more. Gossip Star magazine, which says Mario has pulled out of the project, does not say who will replace him. Mario's second film, Friendship, was a bomb. So, where to now?

Mario has refused to act in television soaps, which leaves only modelling, and movie acting. Forgive me for saying so, Mario, but we've probably had our fill of you in magazines and on the catwalk. Time to find a suitable, new starring film role fast.

Love of Siam: The missing kiss

Fans of the Thai gay coming-of-age movie, Love of Siam, are planning a complaint to True Visions after it screened the movie the other night - minus the key kissing scene between Tong and Music.

Love of Siam screened on satellite channel True Film Asia on Sunday, its first time on Thai television, and marking 10 months to the day since the film opened in Thai cinemas.

I didn't see the whole movie. I started viewing moments after Tong's mother had been to see Music to tell him to keep away from her son. She had seen the pair kissing at a party in her garden. Well, she saw them kissing in the original version released in cinemas, anyway.

If you did not know the film, then in the absence of the gay kissing scene, you might be at a loss to know why she reacted in that way. The kissing scene was the lynchpin of the film, and coloured all events which followed.

True Film Asia shows Asian and Thai movies. Unlike some of the other channels offered by True Visions, such as HBO, the movies are often cut, or 'offending' scenes pixelated out - for example, in the parts of the movie I saw, scenes of the teen characters smoking were blurred. Liquor bottles were also blotted out. Apparently, the scene where Tong holds Music in his arms as they are lying down together was also cut.

That's the influence of Thai censors at work. Writing at the Pantip webboard, Love of Siam fans say they are upset about the way the movie was treated, and are marshalling support for a joint complaint to True Visions.

'You can always watch it on DVD if you don't want to watch a censored version,' retort some posters.

That's hardly the point. Subscribers pay good money for True's subscription satellite TV service. Who wants to watch a movie which has been chewed over and spat out by the censors first?

      Love of Siam: Retrospective

Last night, Thai gay coming-of-age drama Love of Siam screened on Thai television for the first time.

It showed on satellite channel True Film Asia, under the English name 'Square of Love'. I watched most of it. The boyfriend, who as I write this is singing passages from the main theme song, Kan Lae Kan, joined me for the last half hour.

It was the disjointed original version of the movie, rather than the director's cut. Its television debut marks 10 months to the day since the film started showing in Thai cinemas.

Since then, its popularity has spread far beyond these shores. The film is now screening in Taiwan. It is also showing at the Bangkok International Film Festival this month.

Many of the Malaysian and Singaporean bloggers I read have seen it, and love it.

As it happens, I added four new non-Thai, Asian blogs to the blog roll last night. Two of them have posts lauding Love of Siam.

Writing at the Pantip webboard, one Thai fan who met online a Love of Siam fan in mainland China, said that the film is popular among teens there, too.

Director Chukiat Sakweerakul and male lead 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul travelled to Taiwan to promote the film. You can see them in the images which illustrate this post. Pitch's co-star Mario Maurer was unable to join them.

A search of this blog for the words 'Love of Siam' brings up 103 posts. Some refer not to the movie, but co-stars Mario and Pitch, whose fame has probably surpassed anything they imagined.

On its opening day in Thai cinemas, Thais wrote up their reactions at the Pantip board. The next day, I wrote a two-part post about how they felt. This is how it started:

'One audience burst into applause when the film ended. Another laughed throughout - and the girls screamed with delight when the male leads kissed. Young men and women leave the cinema with tears streaming down their faces.

'That's a sample of popular reaction to the Thai coming-of-age drama, Love of Siam, which is the talk of the town.

'In an early review, the Manager newspaper declared that Love of Siam, which opened yesterday, was a film in which all Thais could be proud. Judging by reaction on Thai webboards, this film does not divide audiences, but unites them.'

In the mood for nostalgia? The post starts here.

More readers have probably visited this blog for news on Love of Siam than they have any other topic. In that regard, it owes a debt of thanks to director Chukiat Sakweerakul.

Remember 'Love of Siam syndrome'? That's the malaise which Thai audiences say afflicted them after they watched the film. They felt moody and sad for days, such was the film's emotional impact as it explored the eternal theme of love.

Few mainstream Thai films have ventured into the realm of family drama like Love of Siam; still fewer have dared to depict gay love among teens, despite the fact that the subject is no longer taboo, at least for the younger generation.

Towards the end of the film, Mario's character Tong is chatting with school friends at a condo. One asks him if he is gay.

Tong storms off, saying he wasn't prepared to talk about such nonsense. His friends react not be asking suspiciously why he refused to answer - but by criticising each other for hurting his feelings.

Postscript: A website on Love of Siam, created by a Taiwanese fan, is here. I left a link to it in an earlier post on the film's debut in Taiwan. It has now been updated to include new videoclips, and a pretty piano version of the Klure song, Kan Lae Kan.

According to Yahoo Taiwan, Love of Siam is in 12th place at the Taipei box office in its first week. The Thai horror Phobia (?#3637;#3656;???#3656;?, 4 bia, or Phobia), another newcomer, is doing even better: it is in fourth place.

LATEST UPDATE: 4 Romance: Mario, Pitch

Thai actors Mario Maurer and 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul, at a 'buang suang' ceremony held to launch production of the Sahamongkol Films romance, 4 Romance, held in Bangkok yesterday.

The two actors appeared together in the gay coming-of-age drama, Love of Siam.

They will appear in separate parts of this four-part romance, made by four directors, which opens in Thai cinemas on Nov 27.

Pitch also appears in a group shot with director Chukiart Sakweerakul (Love of Siam), and actor 'Non' Chanon Rikulsurakan (?? ???? ?#3636;?#3640;??#3640;????), who also acted in Love of Siam. Chukiart, who is directing the pair in a segment called Dream, is the one striking a gay pose and wearing the large sunnies.

Both Pitch and Mario look puffy in the face. Maybe it was the sun.

4 Romance: Filming to start (2)

More scenes from the 'buang suang' ceremony held to kickstart production of the Sahamongkol Films romance, 4 Romance, held in Bangkok yesterday.

The four-part film has four directors, presenting their own 'take' on love, in four different film-making genres, or styles.

Chukiat Sakweerakul (Love of Siam), for example, is making a fantasy romance, starring 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul and the band August, from the Love of Siam. You can see them in the group shot above; Chukiat is the one wearing the red sunglasses.

Only one girl appears in the cast picture. I suppose he needed a token female, but otherwise they are all males, which should suit him fine.

The other three directors contributing to the project are Pracha Pinkaew; Bandit Thongdee; and Rachen Limtrakul.

Rachen is directing Mario in a part called Kiss. The lead actress is a new face to acting whose name was not given.

As I said yesterday, Sahamongkol Films is using two names for the film. In English, it appears as 4 Romance. In Thai, it calls the film by its four component parts, which I have translated as Dream, Sweet, Shy, and Kiss.

The producers may opt for fancier translations into English when it arrives in cinemas, but those basic tags will do for the meantime.

The buang suang ceremony, with its fruit and food offerings to the gods, and plenty of incense, is supposed to bring good fortune to the film crew as it enters production, or at least ward off bad luck.

Above is a picture of a clapper board, where the four-pronged name of the film as it appears in Thai.

The film opens in Thai cinemas on Nov 27.

      4 Romance: Filming to start

Pictures from the 'buang suang' ceremony held to start work on the four-part romance, 4 Romance, starring a huge cast, including Thai actor Mario Maurer.

The ceremony, which is traditionally held just before shooting begins, is supposed to ward off bad luck. It was held in Bangkok today. The film opens in cinemas on Nov 27.

Above you can see the four directors, Chukiat Sakweerakul (Love of Siam); Pracha Pinkaew; Bandit Thongdee; and Rachen Limtrakul.

Chukiat is the one wearing the red sunglasses. He is directing one part of the four-part movie, a fantasy called Dream, starring 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul, whom he last directed in Love of Siam.
In the cast shot where they are facing the camera, you can see Pitch standing next to Chukiat in the back.

Mario looks padded up, fat even. At the Pantip webboard, where some of these images were posted, readers are asking what has happened to his good looks of old.

They have turned their attention to the bearded guy instead - a model, and new face to acting called 'Boy' Pakorn Chadborirak (???-????#3660; ?#3633;????#3636;?#3633;??#3660;).

Sahamongkol Films, which is making the romance 'form' movie (whatever that is), refers to 4 Romance by the name of the four parts making it up: Dream, Sweet, Shy, and Kiss (?#3633;?-????-???-?#3641;?). I hope hope that's a working title...4 Romance sounds much better.

      4 Romance: Mario, Pitch reunited

Thai actors Mario Maurer and 'Pitch' Witwisit Hiranyawongkul, last seen together in the coming-of-age gay drama Love of Siam, are being reunited for a movie called 4 Romance, out in late November, according to fans at a Thai movie webboard.
Well, reunited in a manner of speaking - 4 Romance is a four-part story of love, as seen through the eyes of four directors, who are all 'for' romance.
Mario is in one part directed by one director; Pitch and August are in another part directed by someone else.
The four directors contributing to the film are Chukiat Sakweerakul (?#3641;??#3637;???#3636; ?#3633;??#3636;#3660;?#3637;???#3640;?), who lasted directed Mario and Pitch in Love of Siam; Pracha Pinkaew; Bandit Thongdee; and Rachen Limtrakul.
The four parts are called Dream Sweet, Shy, and Kiss.
Chukiat is directing Pitch and his band August in his part of the movie, a fantasy called 'Dream'. Pitch's band, August, was created for his last movie, Love of Siam.
Rachen Limtrakul is directing Mario in the part called - wait for it - Kiss! The lead actress is a new face to acting whose name was not given.
Shy, directed by Bandit, stars actress Tan Kanya Rattanaphet, from Love of Siam, and a new face as the male lead.
Sweet, directed by Prinya, stars actor Chakrit Yaemnam, 'Champ' Wasit Phongsopha from Khao Chon Gai, and Saipan Apinya, from Friendship, also starring Mario.
Those details appear at the Popcorn magazine website for Thai movie fans.
At the Pantip webboard, a thread has appeared today which says that another male star from Love of Siam, 'Non' Chanon Rikulsurakan (?? ???? ?#3636;?#3640;??#3640;????), is also in 4 Romance.
Presumably Non, who played guitarist 'X', has been cast in the part directed by Chukiat.
A fourth male star is mentioned, a young man called Nai (or Nine). I know nothing about him.
Pantip readers ask if any gay romance is included in the film.
'Mario, Pitch, Non and Nine - that's a four-part romance in itself,' says one.
Those four male actors have posed for pictures for the movie poster (see above). Mario looks like someone has beaten him up.
The band August is releasing a single from its second album next month. That could be linked to the film, as it is mentioned at the same Pantip thread which talks about the movie.
The movie has a hi5 site, where you can view more slides of the main actors. You can find it here.
Postscript: I am changing the spelling of Pitch's name slightly, to bring it into accord wth the spelling given on his Wiki page. Note to all those Pitch (?#3636;?-?#3636;??#3660;?#3636;?#3636;? ?#3636;?#3633;????#3660;?#3640;?) fans who have copied my blog posts shamelessly onto webboards, fansites, and the like: Update yourselves now.

The Love of Siam (Thai: ???????????, or Rák Hàeng Sà-yaam ; RTGS: Rak haeng Sayam) is a 2007 Thai romantic-drama film, written and directed by Chookiat Sakveerakul. A multi-layered family drama, a controversial element of the story is a gay romance between two teenage boys.

Plot Mew, a stubborn kid, is neighbor to Tong, an energetic boy who lives with his parents and sister. After accidently spitting gum into Mew's hair, Tong wanted to befriend Mew but was unsuccesful. At school, Mew was cornered by several other students was harrassed until Tong stepped in to defend him. Tong was injured and apoligized to Mew for the chewing gum incident. Mew was grateful for Tong stepping in and responded that they were even. The two became good friends from that point on.

Mew plays on his grandpa's piano and is joined by his grandma, who begins to play a song. Mew asks his grandma why she liked that song and his grandma responded with telling Mew that it was played for her by his grandpa. It was a way for him to express his love to her and explains that one day, Mew will be able to do the same for the person he loved.

Tong's family goes to Chiangmai and returns without Tong's sister Tang since she wanted to stay with her friends a couple days more. Tong bought Mew a present and decided to give it to Mew piece by piece in a game of Treasure Hunt. One by one, Mew found all of the pieces except for the last one which was hidden in a tree. The tree was cut down before Mew was able to retrieve it leaving the present Tong bought for Mew incomplete. Tong was dissapointed at their misfortune, but Mew remained grateful for Tong's efforts. Tang called her parent's and told them that she would extend her stay at Chiangmai until the 24th of December. Tong looks at his calendar and realizes that Tang will not be able to attend the Christmas play he would participate in.

After the Christmas play, Tong recieves a phone call from his parents telling him to stay with Mew and his grandma. After spending the night at Mew's house, Tong awakens to the sight of his parents along with Mew and his grandma. Tong is told that his parents are going to Chiangmai a couple days to look for Tang. Tong lives in depression until his parents come back, only to find out that Tang may be lost. Tong is devastated and cries in front of Mew, who is trying to comfort his friend.

Months have passed and Tong's family decides to move. On the day of the move, Tong finds Mew sitting on a ledge overlooking a pier. Tong says his final words and departs in a car. Tong looks back only to find Mew walking towards the car before coming to a stop and crying for losing his best friend.

The boys are reunited during their senior year of high school at Siam Square. The musically talented Mew is the leader of a boy band called August. Tong has a pretty girlfriend, Donut. The meeting stirs up old feelings that Mew has harbored since boyhood, his love for Tong.

Mew's band, meanwhile, has a new manager, June. She looks just like Tong's long-lost sister, Tang. After meeting June, Tong and his mother, Sunee, devise to a plan to pay June to pretend she is Tang, in hopes that it will pull Tong's father out of his alcoholic depression. Tang borrows a story from the Thai film Ruk Jung, saying she has amnesia, which is why she has forgotten how to say her family's Catholic grace at the dinner table.

Mew is also the object of an unrequited crush of a neighbor girl, Ying. But Mew has strong feelings for Tong, which have inspired him to write new songs.

The boys share a prolonged kiss in Tong's backyard one night after a party in honor of the return of Tang. Tong also spends the night with Mew, which causes his mother to worry.

At Christmas time, as Tong and his mother are decorating a Christmas tree, they have a heart-to-heart talk about making choices, and Tong asks his mother to let him make his own choices.

Tong then goes to Siam Square for a date with Donut. Mew's band is playing nearby, so Tong abandons Donut and tells her he cannot be with her. He then rushes to see Mew play and is guided there by Ying, who has accepted the fact that Mew loves Tong. After the performance, Tong gives Mew a gift, a missing nose from a wooden doll that Tong gave him when they were children. However, Tong tells Mew he can't be his boyfriend but that doesn't mean he doesn't love Mew.

Marketed as a typical teen romance between boys and girls, the gay aspect of the love story was controversial.

Thai-language web boards were posted with messages of support, as well as accusations by moviegoers that they were misled into watching "a gay movie."[1]

Director Chookiat Sakveerakul admitted the film was marketed on the film posters and in the film's previews as a straight romance because he wanted it to reach a wider audience.[1]

"The movie is not all about gay characters, we are not focusing on gay issues, we are not saying, 'let's come out of the closet, so obviously, we don't want the movie to have a 'gay' label," he said in an interview.[1]

But the director confirmed the mixed reaction of audiences. "I went incognito to a movie theater and observed the audience. I didn't expect such a strong reaction. Maybe I was just too optimistic that homophobia in Thai society had subsided."[1]

Box-office performance The Love of Siam was released in Thai cinemas on November 22, 2007, opening on 146 screens. It was the No. 1 film at the Thai box office that weekend, topping the previous No. 1 film, Beowulf.[3] It slipped to No. 2 the following weekend, unseated by the comedy film, Ponglang Amazing Theater.[4] In the third week of release, it had dropped to No. 5, with to-date box office takings of US$1,198,637.[5] It has grossed a total of US$1,305,125 to date.

Critical response The Love of Siam was received with critical acclaim upon its release.

Bangkok Post film critic Kong Rithdee called the film "groundbreaking", in terms of being the first Thai film "to discuss teenagers' sexuality with frankness". He praised the mature, realistic family drama aspects of the film, as well as the solid performances, particularly by Sinjai Plengpanich as the mother Sunee.[6]

Another Bangkok Post commentator, Nattakorn Devakula, said the film contained important lessons for Thai society. "The point that the film attempts to teach viewers – and a largely conservative Thai society – is that love is an evolved form of emotional attachment that transcends sexual attraction of the physical form."[7]

A reviewer for The Nation called the film "brilliantly conceived".[8]

A few critics found fault with the film, among them Gregoire Glachant of BK magazine, who commented that "The Love of Siam isn't a very well shot movie. Chookiat's camera only records his dull play with equally dull angles and light as it wanders from homes to schools, to recording studio, and to Siam Square without sense of purpose or directions."[9]

The film was first shot on December 26, 2006[12], taking advantage of the Christmas lights and decorations of Siam Square and the surrounding area.[13]

The Love of Siam is unusual among Thai films in many respects. First, at 150 minutes, the film is markedly longer than most other Thai films, and second it is a drama film, which is rare in the Thai industry, which mainly produces horror, comedy, action and (heterosexual) teen romance films.

Director Chookiat Sakveerakul said he felt the longer running time was needed to more fully develop all the characters and the story. He received full backing for this decision from producer Prachya Pinkaew and the production company, Sahamongkol Film International.

"They liked the first cut, which was even longer, so I didn't need to convince them that much. I feel that every minute of the movie is important, and I'm glad the audience will be able to see it in full," Chookiat said in an interview before the film's release.[14]

A nearly three-hour "director's cut" was released in January, 2008 exclusively at the House RCA cinema. It is booked for two sold-out shows a day through the end of February, 2008 with the possibility of an extended run.

The film was a departure for Chookiat, who had previously directed the horror film, Pisaj and the psychological thriller, 13 Beloved.

The gay romance was also unusual, in that it involved two "straight acting" boys. In most Thai films with gay characters, gay men are coarsely depicted as transgenders or transvestites with exaggerated effeminacy.

The young actors portraying Mew and Tong both had difficulties with the kissing scene.

Witwisit Hiranyawongkul, who portrays Mew, accepted the role because it was challenging and because he was interested in working with the director, who was a senior classmate at Montfort College in Chiang Mai.[1]

Mario Maurer, of Chinese-German descent, portrayed Tong, and was "nervous". "I've never kissed a man and kissing is not something you do every day," he said in an interview. "My father said it was just a job and not to think about it too much."[1]
